Hello all, I'm a relatively new player, and am also new to the group.
I enjoy immensely the time I spend reading others' posts; I learn a lot
about the game. I have read the guidebook.

After experimenting with serveral PC combinations, and failing
miserably numorous times, I decided on a fairly easy combination: gray
elven wizard. I have made it to level 27, stats are:
St:29 Le:49 Wi:35 Dx:24 To:26 Ch:26 Ap: 3 Ma:49 Pe:39 N=
DV/PV: 43/31 H:301(301) P:495(495) Exp: 27/3137555 Sp: 119
I have done the rift, made it to about D:30, cleared darkforge, the
pyramid, the tomb of the High kings, and just about every other place I
can think of, and am contemplating the minitour maze next. But before
that, I want to loot Shyssiryxius' cave. How should I kill her? Death
ray is inefective, and I don't think she will succumb to any other
bolt/ray/missle spell. I thought about petrifing her, but I'd like the
expieriance points. Should I cast darkness and kill her in melee? The
poblem with that approach is how to check my progress. So what do the
gods of ADOM say?

Well, howdy-doo yourself. Glad you're having fun.

This discussion is fairly spoily, so I'll put in some space.

I don't know what the gods would say, but I'd suggest avoiding her until
later. I know, she can have some tempting junk down there, but speaking
from personal experience water breath -- not just hers, but the (giant)
dragon turtles as well -- could possibly wipe out this grey elf in one
turn, and if not, it'll leave you in a really bad spot.

Now, darkness... Darkness is a fantastic spell in general. But it has
its problems (at least in v1.1.1). You may have noticed already that,
when a creature is moribund, they may decide to "fight to the death in a
blind rage!" This can happen in the dark as well as the light.
Personally, I haven't experienced that with the water dragon, but others
have, and she is really very nasty in melee, particularly when you get
her to the "blind rage" stage (for future reference, the group refers to
it as "berferking").

From my experience, elemental bolt spells and Burning Hands are pretty
much ineffectual. If you really want to take her down at your level, you
might well be stuck with melee in darkness... far from an ideal situation.

One alternative might be to cast Darkness throughout the cave, pick
everything up, teleport to the stairs and leave. This means leaving ol'
Shyssy behind, but if it means surviving to continue the game rather
than dying and... not continuing, then it might well be worth it. I've
never tried this, though (I don't usually get my wizards that far), so
don't take my word that it'll work; wait for some more input first. I'm
not really good with wizards. If you need tips for assassins, though,
I'm your man.
