Hello community and tom's Hardware staff,

I usually fix mondane PC and laptop issues for friends and family, and my coworker brought me his TOSHIBA laptop (old one) running WINDOWS 7 ULTIMATE that I installed on that laptop some time ago.

Now, the owners of the laptop did something and now when you click the POWER BUTTON, it comes to this message:
"The Group Policy Client service failed the logon Access denied"
if I click ok, I get redirected back to the windows account selection screen ... I HAVE ONLY 1.
If I click that, I get the same message again, and I can only go back to the windows account selection screen again.

THINGS I TRIED SO FAR:

1. I tried googling with TERRIBAD results, people talking about logging into another account that has administrator settings enabled and then doing something in the registry... and I have only 1 account and it has admin settings....hell...its the only one... so can't acces anything.

2. I tried to press F8, entering the SAFE MODE with networking, to do something in the registry, but fails to log again, I get to choose an account, when I click the only one I have, it writes Logging in ---> black screen ---> logging off. back to windows account selection screen!

3. Tried to press F8, entering the SISTEM RECOVERY, and rolling back the settings to an old date when this wasn't happening. And the only system recovery it offers is from today, which is not good, then I chceck a box down saying SHOW MORE RECOVERY POINTS, and then it gives me 10 days before... Starts the recovery process, and then after taking roughly 15 minutes, I get an ERROR MESSAGE saying it couldn't finish bla bla bla System error 0x8000ffff

Thank you in advance.

you will need to do the following steps for that :
* remove the system hard drive from that laptop and connect it to your computer
* access the registry of that system hard drive

* fix the registry of that system hard drive

Solution

Thank you for the quick and detailed explanation on how to solve my problem.

Unfortunately I dont know how to open laptops and stuff, I dont dare, only PC's ....
That is definetly a solution to handle the registry from another pc.

I guess there is no way to do it on the laptop without opening it except a fresh reinstall of windows?
