The Intel or the AMD way?

Hey,

what is the best choice:

i5 3570k+MSI z77a g43
fx 8320 +Asus M5a99fx pro r2.0

both with the cooler master hyper 212 evo.

The thing I don't like with the intel choice is buying a dead socket, Is it worth it?

3570k better gaming performance, 8350 better rendering and photoshop performance.

The 3770k beats both, with gaming performance of the 3570k and above the rendering/photoshop performance of the 8350. It does, of course, cost $100 more. Unless you live near a Microcenter, they cost only $229 there, instead of $329.

The AM3+ socket was dead when it was released. So there's really no difference there.

edit: I want to game and do some editing(after effects, c4d, photoshop) with my pc. Also getting a hd 7870 xt.

We can't tell you definitively unless you tell us what you're doing with it.

If you're gaming, go with the i5. If you're doing something heavily multithreaded, go with the FX.

Haha, fair enough.

Unless the editing work is done so often that a few more seconds applying a filter is going to be a deal breaker, I'd go with the i5 - it's not like it's not capable for editing, by any means.

Intel usually doesn't keep sockets around like AMD does - they have their tick-tock cycle, and a socket lasts through one of those; and since there's no point in upgrading by one generation, I wouldn't worry about it.

Honestly, having the socket be upgradable isn't really that big of a concern at all anymore, with both how powerful CPUs are and how little the increase in power is per generation.

AM3+ isn't dead at all, it's getting steamroller...and AMD has committed to the socket through 2015.

Additionally, anything you could do on an i5-3570k, the FX8350 will do as well or better for the most part...(itunes and skyrim being the outliers there).

I would say, if you multitask a lot, play games and do lots of multimedia type stuff, you're better served with the FX8350. If you mostly game, pick either one, the difference won't be much one way or the other.

If you intend to OC, go with the FX8320/8350...those will OC quite nicely.

If I had to buy today I'd probably go the FX route but probably the 6350, then save for Steamroller upgrade.

+1 The FX6350 for the same money as the FX6300 with it being a higher binned chip @ 3.8 GHz/4.2 TC is a really good buy for the money.

I like AMD but I wouln't say keeping around a stale/old chipset is actually good.. I would like to see AMD shorten their cycles alongside with Mobos like intel does. I never keep old MOBOS when upgrading my system, what's the point of that anyway?

I mean.. AM3 doesn't even support key features like USB3 and PCIe 3x .. common there are e readers with usb3 nowadays, GG AMD.

Uhm am3+ does support usb 3 and you wont notice the difference between 2x or 3x.

Can always get a PCIe 3.0 dual port card. They're like $15.

I did that for my old i7 system. No need to upgrade the MB just for that.

+1 970/990X/990FX mobos all support USB 3.0, and if they don't shame on the manufacturer because the chipset is setup to run it.

I would bet we won't see AM4 until DDR4 becomes mainstream. Since that's really the next relevant change anyway. You could argue quad channel memory, but I would argue how many people are actually using LGA 2011 and the SB-E/IB-E processors anyway? 3-5% of the market...maybe? If it's over 10% I would be utterly amazed.
