Question The Last Of Us CTDs

For the past six months, i've been playing "The Last Of Us", at 4K Ultra Settings.

My rig, consists of an i9 13900K, an RTX 4090, 64 GBs of RAM and a 1000W PSU.

Sometimes, i would raise render scale up to 200, and, even it would take up to 19 GBs of VRAM, i could still get 20-30 FPS.

However, and for some reason i don't understand, whenever i try to play with a render scale of 200 in these last few days, i always get CTDs.

I tried both reinstalling the game and reverting to an older version of GPU drivers, but to no avail.

At the same time, i have encountered zero issues playing other demanding games or running benchmarks like 3DMARK.

For example, i can play Far Cry at ultra settings and a high resolution scale, which takes up to 18 GBs of my cards VRAM, and still get up to 40 FPS.

Or i can run Cyberpunk at 4K native Ultra settings RT overdrive and get 25 to 30 FPS.

At the fear of a possible GPU failure, due to a melt problem, i pulled the adapter out and checked it, but it's all good.

I know it's a weird problem, but does anyone have an idea about what i can do?

Have you checked Event Viewer or Reliability History to see what is being shown there?

Are you monitoring temperatures?

Do you regularly clean dust out of the PC?

Temperatures are never higher than 60-62 degrees C.

As for the dust, I only bought my PC back in February and I clean it once a month.

How do I check event viewer and reliability history?

Why on Earth are you raising render scale to 200% if you're already playing at 3840x2160 res?!

I would think that it dips as low as 20 FPS even on the beastly rig you have would be an indicator to you that it's not going to produce a desirable experience. Also, the reason it's now CTDing may or may not be due to the prior 20-30 test result occurring at a less demanding part of the game, as you made zero mention of where each test was done.

I maintain though, a normal person would see a result of 20-30 FPS as unacceptable, vs seeing it as an accomplishment.

I played through the game several times on my meager 8700K, GTX 1080 spec, and was quite surprised I could get plenty adequate FPS at 1080p on High settings. What you are trying is ludicrous though. Just because you have a 4090 doesn't mean it can literally take anything you throw at it.

type them into your search bar

Thanks for the patience. I just did and all the error reports trace the source of the problem back to the game's executable: tlou-i.exe

However, there are no explanations as to what exactly caused it to fail.

Well, during these past months, i could start the game with a 200 render scale any time, or change it mid-game, no matter the part, and it would work just fine.

It's only during these last few days that i can't do it.

Maybe you 're right and i shouldn't do it at all.

It just seems weird that there's suddenly no way to do what i could easily do np, so i just got worried that there's something wrong with my GPU.

But most probably it's insignificant.

Thank you both for taking the time to reply.

As I said, I've played the game extensively and I wouldn't call 20-30 FPS "working just fine". Even when it dipped to 45 FPS for me, which thankfully wasn't during combat scenes, I could see noticeable lag and hitching.

I'm not sure you realize what playing a game with that level of graphics at 200% res scale when you're already at 3840x2160 entails.
