The practicality of a 3K screen on a 15" laptop...

I'm looking at purchasing a new laptop for college/gaming. I'm currently in favor of the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro. However, this model can come with a 3K screen or a standard 1080p screen. The 3K version is 200 dollars more, and I was wondering if the screen is worth the extra money. I've seen some people say that on a 15" laptop, a 3K resolution is pointless, and that it doesn't scale well, but I'd like a definitive answer.
So...
Is a 3K screen practical in a 15" laptop?

My answer is no. You are cramming 3x the pixels into such a small screen it looks off to most people, let alone how much graphics performance is sacrificed to run said screen.
On a large screen, the difference is large, because each pixel is so big with 1080p, they are more smooth on 3-4k. On a laptop screen, its more of bragging rights.

eh no. just like the guy above said, 3k crammed into a 15 inch is useless. Plus, your gpu will work way harder meaning less fps.

For laptops especially, stick with 1080P.

tbh, you'll be doing well to read 1080p on a 15" screen. I find my 17" a bit small for 1080p. I wouldn't even consider 3k for a laptop.

I bought the GS60 ghost pro with the 3k display, and after living with it for awhile, I am happy to have made the extra expenditure.
Initially it was annoying, with scaling issues when connecting to external displays specifically. However, after using the laptop for a few months I have gown to love having the additional desktop real estate as working space.

Where it really shines is in using this as a remote support tool, I can run remote desktop sessions at full res and sill have room to maneuver around the desktop. This was something that was a constant annoyance on the 1080 display of the HP envy 15 laptop this replaced.

I am quite happy and will appreciate the premium this display will bring when I sell if off for the "next big thing" next year 😉

Biggest drawback of a 1080p screen is it is too wide for a single app or browser window and not wide enough to run 2 side by side. You need more resolution to make use of the real estate. So you need atleat a WQHD screen or a 3k screen, usage diffrence is as below.
2560x1440(WQHD) - good for 2 browser, or document windows side by side. But will feel cramped if you run any other app side by side.
2880x1620 (3k) - this is the best of all scenarios, not only is it good for 2 side by side browsers/documents also for applications, and still not bad on battery.
3840x2160 (4k) - You will be forced to run at 125% dpi atleast which is again 3k equivalent, only the text will be sharper but with a signiicant cost on battery. since this is a small laptop screen. this increase in sharpness is not really noticable. on a larger screen at 27 inches this reolution is used to cram 3 windows side by side

So yes 3k screen is the best resolution screen you can have in a laptop. every other resolution is a compromise.
