Hello!

I would like to give my old rig a few more good years. So I´m considering buying a new GPU. However, I find it difficult to decide what card would be fitting (in terms of maximising its potential without being overkill).

Current GPU: Zotac Geforce GTX 260 896mb.

OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400@ 3.00GHz, 3000 Mhz, 2 Core(s), socket775
MOBO: Phoenix Technologies, LTD ASUS P5N-D ACPI (PCIe 2.0)
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 2x2GB DDR2 (333,3 mhz)
PSU: Corsair vx550w

I´m also getting a SSD.

Also, I´d prefer a card that´s quiet and small, since my case doesn´t have much room (my current GPU runs pretty hot).

So if you have suggestions or opinions, I´d love to hear them! :)

Solution
Agree with the card suggestions, either the GTX750Ti or R7 260X would be my choices as well.
If the system has limited ventilation, go for the GTX750Ti, it produces less heat that the R7 260X.
i paired a q6600 with an r9-270 and like the combo. your cpu is not that far off from this (dual core vs quad core) and i think this could also be a good match for you. your psu will run it fine and it is not too big of a card though some of them are kind of long. mine runs cool and quiet in the dell xps case it is in.

a gtx 750 or AMD Radeon 7770 GHZ edition can be picked up on newegg.com for under $100

Both would be a great edition to your rig

but if you can pick up a gtx 750ti then don't hesitate.
