hello everyone, this problem has been with me since i got my laptop in 2019, its this mysterious BSOD (INTERRUPT_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED ntoskrnl.exe ) that appears and disappear for some reason, it only occurs during gaming, it could be at the first 5 minutes, it could be few hours later, also i say mysterious because it disappear for months and comes back, today i got it for the first time in 3 months, but sometimes it occurs repeatedly non-stop and its driving me insane, i looked up forums and did :

1-update all of my drivers
2-did a memtest86 scan
3-got new ram sticks
4-replaced my hdd with an ssd
5-Ran the System File Checker
6-did a factory reset
7-uninstalled and reinstalled gpu driver with DDU
8-updated my bios
9-updated windows 10
10-ran an antivirus (malwarebyte) multiple times

and many other minor fixes that did absolutely nothing, some say its your device is overheating (its not) sometimes i get BSOD before the game can even starts, beside the laptop temps don't cross 70c even while playing highly demanding games, and no i didn't do any overclocking, many pointed that sometimes its caused by OC but i didn't overclock anything.

here is the dumpfile

https://www.mediafire.com/file/8sne5bpn0gwpx8f/122621-10171-01.rar/file

here is my laptop specs
hp omen 17
INTEL I7-7700HQ
NVIDIA GTX 1070
Toshiba NVMe SSD 256 GB
CRUCIAL 2X8 GB RAM @ 2400Mhz
CRUCIAL SSD 2TB
WINDOWS 10 64-BIT

that is an uncommon BSOD

Newest version of Intel Management Engine Interface?

tried running this? https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/15951/19792/intel-processor-diagnostic-tool.html?

I will ask someone to check dumps. If it survives a reset its unlikely to be drivers. But we can check.

ok i ran the intel processor diagnostic tool and everything seems to be ok, it passed everything, i did update Intel Management Engine Interface, i don't know if it gonna help but i will try everything, also take your time with the dumpfile, i won't be going anywhere.

Hi, I ran the dump file through the debugger and got the following information: https://jsfiddle.net/bjaLd50g/show This link is for anyone wanting to help. You do not have to view it. It is safe to "run the fiddle" as the page asks.

File information:122621-10171-01.dmp (Dec 26 2021 - 08:13:32)
Bugcheck:INTERRUPT_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (3D)
Probably caused by:memory_corruption (Process: System)
Uptime:5 Day(s), 16 Hour(s), 21 Min(s), and 57 Sec(s)

Comment: The overclocking driver "IOCBios2.sys" was found on your system. (Intel Extreme Tuning Utility)

System: OMEN by HP Laptop

It was a General Protection fault
They usually occur when a program is trying to access and use a memory portion that’s being used by another process or program. In other words, the error indicates that a specific portion of memory is not available. GPF errors may also indicate that a program is trying to access memory that is not authorized to access. Simply put, you’re dealing with a memory violation problem.

Try running disk cleanup, other fixes include running SFC which you already have

replaced ram & boot drive, CPU tests out okay
I assume you clean installed on the ssd?

which version of win 10

  1. right click start
  2. choose run...
  3. type winver and press enter
  4. current version is 21H2
Is it same game or it doesn't care?

yes windows 10 ver is : 21H2, i did a reset on the NVMe while the 2.5 SSD remained the same.
i do disk cleanup from time to time, and i did run SFC and this was the outcome :

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at
windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline
repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag."

i ran SFC a billion time in the course of 1.5 year, this is the first time i see this, everytime i run it its the same "all file good" message.

also here is the CBS file

https://www.mediafire.com/file/gyqxmlqsdk8qjqi/CBS.rar/file

it can be any game, metro exodus, mw3, bo3 zombies any game wreck the pc.

No need to read logs if the files were fixed.
I never find anything with sfc, hardly run it though. I just did and it found nothing as usual.
edit: asked about PSU but its a laptop... slaps self.

it feels like a driver problem but after a reset and all this its not showing its face.

i doubt the problem is gone, as stated earlier i ran SFC multiple times since i got this problem and its still present, i did a reset but i don't know if its the hard reset since nothing changed (windows slapped me with a file that had microsoft edge icon that has the names of my applications after the reset).

I never said problem was gone, I said no point reading cbs logs if the SFC fixed the files it found.
Very few BSOD solved by running sfc but it was worth a try. Sometimes it does fix it.

I helped with too many BSOD to ever think they gone unless they mention a driver name we can replace. Only way you know BSOD are gone a lot of times is when they just stop happening.

that's the annoying part, i won't know if the problem is solved or not because it happens in 3 months, sometimes monthly, sometimes weekly, and sometimes 3 or 4 times a day, but that's rare.

Slow bsod that only happen sometimes are annoying, almost as annoying as constant.

The crash shows that an interrupt was attempted but failed. Interrupts are normal, they occur when a process needs to be run right now, and CPU stops what it was doing to run process.

if its caused by software, it is likely an older driver as they become out of date as software changes.
I have seen this before but I am not sure what its for

not sure if there is a newer version of this

ok i've dealt with all of them except the last one, i searched for the intel XTU and didn't find it, i used CCleaner and other tools looking for it but no luck.

This may be wrong, but I'll take a shot. Being an HP gaming laptop, is it possible HP software is using the intel XTU? Have you tried uninstalling any HP performance software? I Googled "iocbios2.sys" and found a few BSOD threads that mentioned that driver.

I don't know if these two links will help. They aren't forum threads, just links on intel xtu.

ok so i removed all the remenant of xtu, except XTU3SERVICE, i don't know if its the culprit alongside the other XTU stuff but do i have to remove it too ? i can't seem to find any removal tutorials about it.

I have never worked with XTU, I just provided some links on it. Perhaps XTU service was being used and wasn't deleted. I would think you would need to remove all XTU stuff, but I don't know. Safer to just follow Intels instructions on removal.

so i looked up intel tutorials and none of them listed it alongside other XTU related files, its strange

I mention the IOCBios2.sys driver because it can (but rarely does) cause BSODs. Any type of overclocking can cause a BSOD if it's pushed too far. But not only that, any type of overclocking drivers can "tweak" the CPU just a tiny bit causing a BSOD. Chances that the XTU driver is causing the issue is minimal though. In addition, the driver mentioned could possibly be installed by other software too, not just XTU. You can probably disable it using AutoRuns (be careful with AutoRuns if you use it).

Maybe @Colif will have more ideas from the latest dump that was posted.

seems its being difficult

I don't normally offer this but as driver isn't showing itself, we have no choice
please do the 3 precautions - https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/driver-verifier-instructions.3686888/

I am trying to recover from an accident and thought I would be fine by now, but I am mistaken. I spent last week trying to sleep at right time and its reason I am not always here to answer questions. Sorry about that

remove that or update it if there is a version that is from the last 2 years or so.

It was cause of the last BSOD. See if that fixes your problem, or not.

I fell over on 10th December. I have bruised ribs, and if I am not on pain killers, its really hard to sleep at night, and my hand also aches - it was injured at time but I can't normally tell. I now have a month off to recover.
