ntdetect failed on start up and that is were it stoped. So I repaired NT 4
server. Now I get this message when I try to logon.

The System can not log you on (C00000DF).
Please try again or consult your system administrator.

any Ideas?

thanks John

After selecting the repair option from NT Setup to repair a ntfs partition,
I am now unable to log in as administrator on the machine. It returns the
message "The system could not log you on (C00000DF)...". The repair process
did inform me however that it was unable to replace the system files:
crypt32.dll, msoss.dll and syskey.exe from the NT4 Server CD-Rom during the
scan for damaged files.

My question is what do I do now?

What service pack was your system at before the repair? Did you use an
Emergency Repair Disk or let it use the Repair folder? Did you choose all
the repair options? Typically this results from using an old, out of date
repair disk which reverts the system back to the service pack level that the
repair disk was made from or the repair fodler was not up to date. Answer me
these questions and we can make some suggestions.

If SYSKEY.EXE is damaged you will not be able to logon to
WindowS NT.
Replace SYSKEY.EXE from the version of Service Pack files
that you had previously to restore logon.

Woops.. This information is WRONG.

Your problem is usually due to mixing original Windows NT
files with some service pack'd files and the registry
changes made when the service pack was installed.

You need to perform the steps in the following article if you had Service
Pack 4 or later originally on this machine before you ran the repair. You'll
have to install a parallel copy of NT in order to get into the system most
likely unless you partition where the winnt folder is on a FAT partition
than you could do this from a Win98 boot disk.
