so I'm in an odd situation

my C partition is currently 70gb (don't know why i set it to that)
so i need to extend the partition but i cant because its a primary partition so...

I was think of backing my current C partition files and everything to a 1Tb external i have.
Then deleting the current partition and reformatting the C partition with a fresh instal of windows making the C about 200gb this time (more than enough i feel).
Then rolling the back up (the old C from the external) over to my new C (so i don't have to reinstall drivers and software).
(cant find the CD that came with the MOBO at the time ... I can its around ... I just dont want to find it 😛).

Thanks,

The way my drive is setup right now is
overall 1Tb
C: 70gb
D: 500gb
UN-formatted 360Gb (+ change)

have you tried partition magic? I haven't used it in 15 years but I think it can resize a primary partition. Or maybe Gparted from a linux live CD?

I'd definitely back everything up first though using something like carbon copy so you have a perfect backup.

the download for Partition Magic from soft soft 32 gives an estimated time of 2 hrs at 2kb a second ... anyone have a direct download link please

well ... waited for a couple of hours waiting for the Trial version of partition magic to download (70$ was a bit much for a one or two time use program especially since i have to try and swing the purchase of adobe CS6 master collection for college [student discount 😀 ] ... CS6 has to be installed on the main partition for what ever reason 😛 that why i have this problem)

anyway
Because it was slow in the mean time i tried some other programs (mini tool partition wizard and Acroins disk director 11 home) none worked so when partition magic finally finished when i went to run the setup it was out of date (this version has comparability issues [ with windows 7] and it directed me to Norton's site where i could find no updates)
....
so I'm going to go with my original plan and just roll a backup on to a fresh copy of windows on a larger partition ... Ill post here again with the results of the "experiment" ... (found my drivers disk to so if it doesn't work ill start from scratch and rebuild my configurations and reinstall my drivers  )

But in the end I think I'll live, at least nothing caught on fire or blew up in my face "you'd be surprised"

😀 at least you guys took the time to reply so

Thank you,
Ryan

so basically i created a full backup of my current C drive and made a backup of the backup program installer on my external hardrive. then just deleted my c partition reinstalled windows on a larger c partition and then just reinstalled the backup program and rolled the back up on to the new c drive and BAM just like it was before drivers and all just on a bigger C partition

an unless you PAY for the programs you can NOT re size a primary partition
