I have tried to recover data stored on a thumb drive using the CMD method - following all your steps - and the computer just comes up with the comment "The type of the file system is RAW. Chkdsk is not available for RAW drives"

Chkdsk won't recover data anyway, at least not in a form that will be of any use to you, the recovered data will just be gobbledygook, fit only for deleting.

There are plenty of free options to recover your partition which is what I would try first.

I haven't used this but they make decent backup software. http://www.easeus.com/partition-recovery/

I've been trying these and other solutions for 2 days now. One minute the flash drive was fine, literally the next, it was unreadable. I have a lot of valuable files on this stupid flash drive. Every piece of freeware finds files & sectors but can't recover files. Is my only option to take it to a professional? And how does that happen, a drive converting itself to RAW? I've tried reformatting the disk, but Windows stops half way.
