U.2 has a future if and when manufacturers of PCIe RAID controllers
realize that the edge connectors need to be full x16 in length,
and at least 4 x U.2 ports are needed for each such RAID controller,
with full support for all modern RAID modes. As long as Intel's
DMI 3.0 link has the same upstream bandwidth as a single M.2 NVMe SSD,
the only way to exceed that limit is an add-on controller with an
x16 edge connector. For example, search for the "Squid PCI Express
Carrier Board": it has the correct topology, it just lacks RAID support.
Dell, HP and Kingston also have add-on cards with an x16 edge connector
and 4 x M.2 ports. In about 2 weeks, Highpoint should be publishing
more specs about their RocketStor 3830A:
