Dear Paul,
"Intel CEO Drops 3D XPoint Bombs" really? We still don't jack about XPoint/Optane. Brian words summarized only to one thing - Intel is working on it and we all already knew that.
So, this title is clear clickbait and it's disgusting to see this crap on what used to my go to resource for most in depth expertise and knowledge

U.2 has a future if and when manufacturers of PCIe RAID controllers
realize that the edge connectors need to be full x16 in length,
and at least 4 x U.2 ports are needed for each such RAID controller,
with full support for all modern RAID modes. As long as Intel's
DMI 3.0 link has the same upstream bandwidth as a single M.2 NVMe SSD,
the only way to exceed that limit is an add-on controller with an
x16 edge connector. For example, search for the "Squid PCI Express
Carrier Board": it has the correct topology, it just lacks RAID support.
Dell, HP and Kingston also have add-on cards with an x16 edge connector
and 4 x M.2 ports. In about 2 weeks, Highpoint should be publishing
more specs about their RocketStor 3830A:
http://www.highpoint-tech.com/USA_new/nabshow2016.htm
"RocketStor 3830A – 3x PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe and 8x SAS/SATA PCIe 3.0 x16 lane controller"

Intel NVMe SSD's are expensive. Much more expensive per GB than similar performance Samsung 950Pro SSD's and more than even higher performance Samsung 960/961 SSD's. Same with Toshiba NVMe's. IF the Intel 750 NVMe SSD's were priced more competitively and came in more standard capacities (rather than oddball 400GB,800GB,1.2TB) they'd be infinitely more popular.

Expanding on my previous comment....Intel 750 400GB SSD is $343. $0.86/GB. A Samsung 950 Pro 512GB is $313. $0.61/GB. And both perform at almost identical levels.
