Hey everyone, it's my first post here, I hope I'm posting this in the right section. I recently built a new gaming rig, and decided to give the witcher 2 a try. After installing and launching the game on ultra settings, my fps hovers at around 30-40, but sometimes drops as low as 18-19 (specially during cutscenes) I find this a bit odd, as my gpu hovers at around 80% usage, whereas my CPU never goes above 65.
(yes, I have Uber Sampling on)
Without Uberampling my fps stays at 60 - actually looks like it's capped there, is that possible?

Also, all my temps are low, and i have 16gb of corsair vengeance memory (not sure if that's relevant in this case, but just for added info.

I'm using an Asus gtx 780 along with an i5 3570k (at stock speed, not comfortable with overclocking just yet)

This is my first build, so I'm not a guru as far as custom pcs go. Also worth noting that I'm using a single 1080p monitor.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Solution

Using GPU usage as a metric is worthless. It doesn't take memory constraints or streaming into account.

Ubersampling brings my dual 7970s to their knees at 2560x1600
Ubersampling is extremely demanding and doesn't have a very high impact on quality. I believe that it's implemented in post-processing (after the scene has been rendered, similar to FXAA) by compositing multiple frames but is implemented in a very inefficient fashion. It will bring any GPU to its knees, especially at 1920x1080 or above. AMD users need to turn it on at one point due to a stupid bug that has remained unfixed though.

Yeah, Witcher 2- while not a brand new game, still has some insane performance demands at Ultra Quality. My GTX 770 struggles to keep steady frames with everything enabled- it's a hog. Struggle is a strong word... but it definitely doesn't destroy it.

Hey Katiklysm. I'm playing Witcher 2 now on my 7950 with most of the settings turned up and sometimes see FPS in the low 40s or even high 30s. For the most part it's around 60 fps but during very intensive scenes or fights it will dip. Was wondering what kind of performance you were getting in that game from your 770 if you don't mind.
