So after extensively researching everything I could find that made sense about thermal paste I thought Id jot down the important stuff:
1. the only real difference ive seen in type x paste vs type y paste is 5 or 6 degrees, the break in time and whether the paste is conductive or not. pick a solid name brand of something with a short break in thats non conductive
2. easiest way to clean old paste is glasses lens cleaning cloths. you can get them cheap cheap at a dept store in single serving disposable packs.. already have isopropyl on them and they are lint free
3. application method: OMG USE DA X, NO NO SMEAR IT EVERYWHERE. man the debate on this is huge, but check this out:
DO NOT touch the cpu or the bottom of the hsf with your bare fingers.. oil will rub off and screw up the bonding of the grease. put some latex gloves on if your clumsy. tint the cpu and hsf after cleaning. by tint i mean put a good bit on there and spread it around well with a credit or id card, scrape it mostly off afterwards..this may seem pointless but it will fill cracks and valleys too small to see with the naked eye. if your AMD use middle dot method.. roughly pea size. INTEL use the middle line method. need a more detailed explanation of either method go here http://www.arcticsilver.com/methods.html
