there a way to fix a discontinued laptop

You could always take it to a local shop or fix it yourself. But It depends on the problem if its an older laptop and its a major issue like a bad motherboard its usually more cost effective to toss it and buy a new one.

Jus because the warranty is expired doesn't mean it can't be fixed. You just have to pay for it. You could contact HP service to find out what they will do for you, contact a local computer repair shop or try to repair it yourself if you have the skills. It really depends on whats wrong with it. If it's something fairly simple like a bad DIMM or bad hard drive then it's pretty easy to fix. Can you descibe what's wrong in detail so maybe we can give you a better answer?

What is the problem and model number. If it's an older DV series that had the bad NVidia chips, forget it, buying a new motherboard even and it will probably have the same problem.
