Since about the beginning of the summer my computer has had around 80-90 processes open when nothing is running. I don't want to end any of them in fear I'll mess up my computer. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can fix this??

Well, I do, for one.

To me, anti-virus software producers are like doctors and doctors need sick people.

I have known an anti-virus program to infect a machine and then miraculously cure it and because of that, I do not entertain ant-virus software at all.

And perversely, it seems that viruses will not entertain me as a result.

And this is part of the reason why I have only 29 running processes when I start my machine.

As I say, you should have a little look at this article - you will definitely improve the performance of your system greatly.

Guaranteed.
And every process has a description in task manager. If you don't get what it does from the description, just search for the name of the process. You will learn the concept fast: everything the pc does. has it's process. explorer, mouse, keyboard, network (has multiple).

what if the description is a bunch of random letters then .exe or it doesn't have a description at all??

Search for the process name from the first column and run a virus scan. I like this: http://www.mcafee.com/us/downloads/free-tools/stinger.aspx

I've heard that mcafree is a big scam

Great! So stay away from it and other anti virus an live on with your 80-90 processes.

Well I would rather that then being scamed of my money and who says thy every antivirus is a scam??
