That was intended as a joke.
It isn't any safer or more unsafe than the possibility of soldering a connector backwards which would result in sending 12V to GPU ground. The PSU will get shunted through the VRM FETs' body diodes and might survive that mistake provided the PSU's over-current protection kicks in before the FETs get destroyed and that the FETs clamp reverse voltage across the GPU die at a low enough voltage not to damage it. On 1000+W single-rail PSUs, this could melt down the PCIe cable.
