Thermal Abortion

With all the discussion of the ATX-vs-BTX issue here, one thing seems
forgotten, which is what an abortion ATX is from a thermal standpoint.

Bigger and bigger fans are not the solution to CPU heat. Liquid
cooling does work but is inelegant and potentially dangerous as
dielectric liquids are usually awkward to deal with when they leak in
a house environment and water, being conductive, means a leak while
running will cause catastrophic failure of the motherboard. (How many
dumbass consumos are going to use DI water? They can't even follow
basic ESD procedures-neither can mom and pop PC white box vendors.)

The solution-besides go to a cooler short instruction set CPU, which
is untenable to Win-loving consumos-is to put the CPU at the end of
the board where it may be bolted to a heavy heat sink. Look at a
Motorola two way mobile radio manufactured from the MM era
(~1953-8/4/62) to a couple of years ago. They all have the PA section
on a big heatsink which forms the end or top of the RF unit's housing.
Cool air all over the unit keeps its temperature within design
parameters.

Sure, Mother M is a mean mother. But cops and EMS/fire crews, moreso
than air crews even, bet their lives on her stuff. Pull your head out,
PC designers, and learn from what works.

Very, erm.... erudite.
