thermal adhesive

hi,

i have accidentally snapped a heatsink of a chip on my sapphire 9800pro the chip is about 4mm X 6mm and the heatsink has base dimensions of about 8mm X 8mm and height of about 8mm it is black. the chip is next to the 4 pin molex connector.
what i wondered was is this heatsink important and should i re-attach it?
if so would it be neccesary to purchase thermal adhesive?
the only type ive found is the arctic silver type, does anyone else know any other types - (preferably non metallic and cheaper) that you can get from a uk shop?
also does anyone know any homemade ways of doing it so i do not have to waste ten pounds on arctic silver thermal adhesive?

I don't think any 9800Pros come with RamSinks (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) so I think you've probably actually snapped a heatsink of one of the little power regulators.

What does the chip actually look like?

I've got some, and used it to attach a whacking great big heatsink to the northbridge on my motherboard. Worked very well, and it's not electrically conductive. That's a UK site that I've bought lots of stuff from and never had a problem.

You can mix arctic silver or any normal cpu thermal grease with epoxy or super glue.

hi,

yeh i think it is a power regulator coz thats what my friends thought too.

do you know what quantities to use of thermal paste and superglue? (ie 1/2 and 1/2)
im geussing that the tube of paste that came with my arctic cooling vga silencer would be fine to mix with super glue?

watch out for super glue though, it is conductive material so dont get it on the board. and what kind of 9800p was it, all the ones i have seen didnt have the ramsinx on them.

hi,

i think im going to buy the thermal adhesive from overclock then as its better to be safe than sorry and knowing my luck ill get some on the board.
mine does not have ramsinks on it but i thinks that the hercules one might come with ramsinks on becuase my friend has one but dont quote me on it.

many of the OEM Saphires R9800 Pro's come with Ram sinks now. I was curious what Ram is under those.

Yes, there are some with ramsinks (one example is Hercules, they put copper sinks on GPU and memory, both on front and back of the card. Really nice

hi,

tbh i dont have a clue which one i broke off from what ppl say im geussing a power regulator.

im going from what is imprinted on the heatsink adhesive as to which chip it came off, of so lets just hope i get the right one.

does any one with a sapphire 9800pro 128mb know which chip has a small black heatsink on ( roughly 8mm x 8mm x 8mm) it should be pretty close to the molex as i was trying to pull out that connector when it came off?

Or here on this Saphire without Ram sinks. Is it the little black heatsink half the size of the Ram? 9-pointed heatsink maybe? If so i am not sure what that is offhand, maybe somebody else knows. yeh it is that 9 pronged heatsink in the pictures of newegg. ive already ordered some artic silver almunia thermal adhesive to stick it back on.
