Thermal compound/greese and stock cooler.

Hello, I have a question.

Im applying arctic silver 5 to a core duo E8500 with the stock, because the cooler is circular at the bottom is it best just to apply a thing line from top to bottom on the cpu so the paste only goes on to the circle of the cooler. Would covering the whole cpu be a disadvange and not be effective as the cooler will not actaully make contect with the whole cpu surface.

Im not sure how it works but id guess putting it all over the cpu would be best maybe it conducts the heat evenly over it/ moves it to the other artic silver faster?

Bingy is right; there's no point in applying compound where it won't be touching anything on the hs. Also, using less is better than using more.
Finally, don't forget to clean off the stock compound from the hs before applying your AS5 - you don't want to have 2 batches of compound applied.

Mondoman. But can covering the whole surface of the cpu be less effective then just making a line(covering the HS circle bottom.) Or does it not really matter, will I get the same temperatures but just use more?(when covering the whole CPU.)

One advantage im thinking of covering all the cpu is that the heat from the edges of the the cpu where there is no HS covering it will then transfer to the middle when the heat is being absorbed. Does this sound true/right?

What should I do?

but anyway regarding the question: imo put either a dot in the middle of the cpu or three lines (middle line being the longest, outer two being short) like the stock thermal paste is applied. remember to clean off the tock TIM with arcticlean or isopropyl alcohol stuff
