Thermal compound question

So I saw this (see pictures) laying around somewhere and I wondered if it was good for using as cpu thermal compound. It's aprox. 200g, so it would be like a life supply of thermal compound, which would be awesome.

Let me know if it's any good, or if I should just buy some quality stuff.

I would honestly avoid that stuff in the pictures and either get Arctic Silver or MX-4. Indeed MX-4 is non metallic so even if you get it on the motherboard it won't short anything out. Best of luck!

I would definitely avoid using the stuff in the pictures. It's labeled as a thermal 'mastic' and says it will not lose 'adhesion'. That sounds like thermal cement to me, almost like a type of glue. You never want to cement your heat sink to your cpu, regular thermal pastes designed for cpu coolers doesn't adhere like that. You don't want it to, it needs to be able to easily come off unless you plan to have that cpu cooler permanently (or even semi permanently) attached to your cpu. It could cause damage trying to remove it later down the road as opposed to normal tim's that release easily. Older motherboards with small passive heatsinks on various components used a sort of thermal cement to adhere them in place of a retention system but also weren't meant to be removed either.

Most decent thermal compounds perform within 1-3c of each other so there isn't a huge difference. Some are electrically conductive, some aren't (depending if they're ceramic/silicone based or metal based). As3, as5, mx4, prolimatech pk1, pk2 etc all perform similarly.

You omitted from your list the more unorthodox yet more nutritious, compounds: Toothpaste, vegemite, nutella.
