News Thermal Grizzly's nifty gadget can prevent Nvidia's 16-pin connector meltdowns — WireView GPU Pro features a GPU power monitor, connector detection...

If only they could make some kind of component that would melt or sacrifice itself in order to break the circuit and save much more valuable equipment!
Anyone who could invent that could make a lot of money!
Like a fuse that links two things? ... Like a .. fusable link? Sounds insane. Also, why would they do that when they can continue selling people replacement 1500 dollar video cards? The design sucks and they're way too busy making money to fix the design.

Have people learnt nothing from the cablemod adapter fiasco?
Instead of sticking yet another random device into the link... push the connector in all the way until it is fully seated, and after you have reefed on the cabling whilst 'dressing' it, check the connector remains fully seated.

I was hoping this device would have some USB 2.0 motherboard header connectors for reading the data on the GPU power monitor.

I'm not a fan of adding another point of failure. High end modular power supplies should come with a cable with a 90 degree 12VHPWR connector.

While this can detect faulty cable insertion that's effectively just a QoL feature as opposed to the actual primary focus. The original WireView was designed as a convenient GPU power monitor predominantly for overclocking. Seeing as the Pro version added temperature sensors with alarm and not plugging in the cable right seemed to be the 12VHPWR issue it makes sense cable detection was put in with it.

Not melt or sacrifice .. but simply shuts down the PC , it is possible. and very easy to do .

It is lame to keep a design where such thing even have a market..

The easy to be slightly yanked out and burned connector is bad enough design, coupling with the ever taller NVIDIA cards squeezing the non vertical mounted GPUs ever closer to the side panels of 90% of pc cases and it’s now said they need at least 35mm of clearance before any bend is beyond stupid design to be out in the first place..

A few months ago I emailed them and they informed me it was still in concept. Is it already out with thermal sensor probes?
update
Still not available on website and has old 12vphpwr and not new 12V-2x6 standard.

The link was in the article it doesn't list 12V-2x6 just the same, but I don't think that's particularly important for cables/adapters: https://www.thermal-grizzly.com/en/wireview-gpu-pro/s-tg-wv-p

Thank you, I guess if you do have the thermal sensors it doess help be actively cognitive about it in real time. Do you know if it has sound feedback or do you constantly have to visually inspect the temperatures? Also would this void the gpu warranty? Thanks I missed that link.

In the detailed description on the TG page:
If an incorrect cable is used or the cable is not properly connected, an audible warning will sound.
As for the temperature sensors the warning limit is adjustable so you can set it however you want. It also has a current limit which can trigger the alarm as well.

I've kicked around getting one, but I don't do much OC these days and don't buy 4090 level cards. If I did either, or both, I probably would though as it's a clever piece of tech.

Unfortunately even with or without oc the risk of burn is there. If these had the 12V-2x6 I would probably get it. Although I am running my 4090 suprim liquid with 1000 watt Vertex seasonic psu at 3ghz/450watts almost since launch. At a minimum having gpuz installed to check your 12v delivery should help identify a poor plug in.

It's not really important for a device like this that has the connection detection as the only pertinent change is the shortened sense pins and longer power pins. The sense line change only matters on the video card side and is dictated by the implementation there no cables/adapters matter. It would have been nice if they'd used the new connector just to maximize safety/simplicity, but it seems minimally important on a device like this.
