So, when I stole my wife's cooler for my 3900x, I had an... incident with thermal paste. I gave her the Prism, which should be overkill for her 1600. Since I've never used an AMD stock cooler before, it twisted some during application, and some thermal paste (I replaced the stock with artic silver 5) got on the side and somehow the pins. I did put more than normal on, seeing how much was on the stock cooler.

Her machine auto shut off 2 days later when encoding with handbrake.

I have cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol and qtips, removed all visual traces, and the fan curve presets seem fine. However, under heavy load, her temp rapidly moves into the mid 80s. Is the paste in the socket? We're the qtips a bad call? Am I the worst husband ever?

That's pretty much the stock cooler for Ryzen. They are ok at idle but when you do any heavy load it will go to the 80's and sound like a jet engine.

So far it doesn't look like that thermal paste is the issue. I would just buy a cheap cooler to replace that Prism and test.
