I have a barebone Clevo x7200 holding an i7 950, 12 GB triple channel RAM. It is pretty heavy and we cannot call it as a notebook! It is connected to the power outlet when in use (as the battery is not sufficient). Some may be thinking why does one buy a notebook that is difficult to lug around the back. Oh..well...there is no point in regretting it now, is there?
It was custom built by a small builder, who was known for building solid notebooks; it is 1 1/2 - 2 years old and worked absolutely fine until recently. The warranty does not matter as the notebook builder went bust recently for right or wrong reasons.
The CPU core is suddenly started shooting through the moon. The PC, even under a normal load of 15% - 25%, hits almost 100 C steadily. The moment it hits 100 or closer by a degree C or 2 C, the system shuts down. Allowing it to cool for 30 minutes or so keeps the system fine until the next shut down cycle at higher temp. I ran Prime95 this morning...a quick test went fine, while a custom run did not sustain. The system got shut down within a few minutes.
I want to open up the notebook, clean all the dust (air duster can) and reapply the thermal paste. I have an Arctic Silver 5; given the breaking period (~200 hours?), is it still fine to apply AS5 or do I need something else please?
Is there anything else I should be aware of to identify the cause of the shut down.
It is connected to the power outlet, so battery should not be a reason. The power adaptor shows a steady green and is designed to output 240.
thanks
