Hello all,
I bought a laptop MSI GL62M 7RD equipped with an i5 7300HQ and a GTX 1050 last year for my heavy computational works and occasional gaming. Very recently, I noticed CPU and GPU giving much higher temperature- CPU giving high 80C's, occasionally touching 94C's (used to be low 80C's) and GPU giving mid 80C's (used to be low 70C's) while gaming. So, I changed the thermal paste myself (the nearest MSI people are too lazy to do this stuff as they said it would take one week and I do not care whether it voids the warranty or not :lol. So, I bought Noctua NT-H1 and tried on both CPU and GPU. However, the temperature didn't drop even after trying different methods- pea size, line and cross method. So, I bought Coolermaster Mastergel Maker Nano as top pastes such as Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut is not available in my place. Even with this, temp didn't drop. At last, I tried spreading method using spatula that came with Coolermaster paste. I spread the paste on heat sink as well as on CPU and GPU die. Voila, this time, CPU maxed at 75C's and GPU maxed at 73C's on intensive games such as DXMD, The Witcher 3 etc for at least 3 hours of gaming. This was 2 weeks ago. However, I started noticing CPU temp rising slowly and GPU temp dropping!. Yesterday while playing, CPU maxed at 89C's and GPU maxed at 67C's. When I opened the laptop to see whats going on, I noticed that paste on CPU is kind of separated- watery at center and paste is at the edges. While that on GPU remained same but a bit thickened. I came across this older post while troubleshooting-http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3392427/thermal-paste-effective-month.html
Now, I have applied Noctua NT-H1 on CPU and Coolermaster on GPU using spreading method both on die and heat-sink. Now, CPU maxes at 75C's and GPU maxes at 72C's while gaming ( I expect GPU temp to drop in few days!). The ambient temperature is 35-40C's. I have few questions-
1. Did I observe a pump out phenomenon in the case of CPU? If yes, why it didn't happen in the case of GPU ( instead I observed temp drops!) ?
2. Is it fine to use different thermal compounds on CPU and GPU?
3. Why spreading method is the most effective in my case though the pea size method is the most preferred choice?
4. If this same phenomenon happens with Noctua NT-H1, can anyone suggest an alternative? (In my place, other than these, Artic Silver 5, Artic Ceramique 2, Artic MX-2, MX-4 are available)
Note: I have cleaned fans and no overclocking has been performed. I usually wipe off thermal paste residues using 99% pure isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth.
Sorry for long post!
Thanks in advance!
