Yeah, probably 10 times over... you are trying to fill in microscopic inconsistencies in the surface, not making a sandwich.

Oh yes. You will use only a tiny bit for each application.

A tiny tube they sell should be good for a dozen cpus.

Just to ask, do I just apply it in a straight small line from a quarter way down in the middle to three quarters up in the middle?

There are so many ways to apply it that it's almost an art form. Some people like to spread it out, some peopel make an X, some peopel make dots in patterns... but really if you just put a small pea sized amount right in the middle then the pressure from the CPU going on will spread it out quite well. You can look up some tutorial videos if you want to estimate how much you should use based on that.
