I'm upgrading my heatsink + fan cause i got a lil more money recently (tax returns! yay!) what's everyones opnion on the Thermal Take Volcano 7 ?

Good choice for AXP 1800+ model ?

Good price at $22.95 with fan control module ?

If your case is well cooled, it will be silent and will cool very well. However if like me, the case is hot inside, the thing can be loud at times, but will ensure proper cooling. My 1600+ does about 43º average, and it's ok noise at that level. The case temp is 32º average. Since it measures case temp, try getting the temp to 28º, it should be very silent and really "cool"...
Yes however, it rocks!
Just get proper cooling, like 2 case fans, one exhaust and one front.

i use a rather perment standing Gateway 2000 Tower case i got at a local bulk place for $5.

It's 22.5" tall, 17" deep, and 10" wide.

it has mounts for 2 fans in the lower front, 2 more mounts for fans infront of the large 3.5" bay rack by the floppy drive, has 4 bays there. it has a mount for a fan out on the back side of the case just between the power supply and the motherboard, and another fan mount up top of the power supply. Another 4 bay rack for 3.5" devices is above the power supply in this case, as well as 4 bays for 5.25" devices just above the floppy.

it's my dream some day to have a dual p4 network server (do they even have dual p4 mobos yet ?) and run full scsi devices in all racks, 40gb 10k rpm each and raid0 em.

But just for now i use it for my amd gaming rig, when i win the lottery i'll buy the dual p4 :)

oh and yes it stays very cool, i have a fan mounted in every avaible slot, all in front blow air in, all in back exaust it out.

Get a alpha pal8045 and a nice 80mm sunon low noise, you will be chilly cold and it will never be loud no matter what your case temp gets to.

No Overclock+stock hsf=GOOD!

Buy it, I have one and I am pleased with it.
My case temp is around 26C and CPU temp mostly 37C, 43C under pressure.

Nuke you, Nuke me, Nuke it together, naturally.

I'd recommend you read this article, the Xeon 1.7 performs close to the MP 1800+ in several applications. Intel also released the NW version of Xeon, which will perform better (and is at higher clock speeds).

For the price, Intel is not a competitor. But for pure performance, yes, they are.

Don't step in the sarcasm!

I guess maybe the NEW Xeon 1.7GHZ, but the last I seen of these procs, there just isn't enough tests it wins at to topple the AMPs. And then the price of course.
But I don't really care, I may never even look at Dualies.

Xeons themselves are not a challenge to Athlons.

Looks like that's been proven wrong again, assuming you will accept THG's benchmarks, which not everyone does.

Ok yeah I said maybe the new Xeons are better, but the ones I've seen, not just here, have been terribly performing unless Dual or Quad, and their price is still not justifiable.
See the Hard News claiming the Xeon with Hyper-Threading is not that much increased performance? I dunno if they're right though.
THG's bench about the Dualies was confusing to me so I gave up on reading it. Scattered coloured lines and numbers with CPU names just isn't my thing I guess. Also why the heck does an MP 2000Dual get beat by an MP1900 Single??

BTW did you see the CeBIT with Frank and Bert's pics? They don't look as much dumb as their articles though. Damn I wish Tom was still here and wrote like he did 2 years ago. I miss the way he expressed nice unbiased feelings on the P4 when it came out and he described its architecture, or the Geforce 3.
