ok i have seen enough reviews about thermalright and thermaltake that i could puke. what i want is first hand experience with either brand or both. i am OCing a 2500 to 2800+ levels. i was at 2.11GHz during the winter but now that summer is here the comp overheats with my OC. so i need advice on which to buy. yes i know SLK-800U or whatever it's called but i want results from people using it. or the volcano 11 or aolcano 10 wtvr you've got give me advice please.

SLK-800 runs better with thermaltakes smartfan II than the Volcano 11. A volcano 7+ heatsink with a smartfan II (I did that before any reviewers I know of did) comes within 1 degree of the SLK-800 in my system.

If you've got the equipment to polish the bottom of the heatsink properly, the volcano 11 might be a better buy, though. I should try that.

Does anybody know how the SLK-900 compares with the SLK-800 concerning performance, mass (mobility of my computer when installed), compatiblity, and performance/price ratio.

Pain is the realization of your own weakness.

the 800U is a little better, and pairing it with a thermaltake smart fan II is a good idea. the slk-900 is slightly slightly better, but not by much. it'll give you a degree or maybe two, but that is easily erased just by margin of error.
i used to have a volcano 7+ and i loved it, except that at High speed the noise was too loud for me.
it cooled very well, but the slk-800U is better

thanx for all the info and the opinons. all very helpful and informative. i am now serching for the best deal on a SLK-800U. and i'm gonna go buy another Smart Case Fan II to go with.

I have used both the Volcano 11 and the SLK-800U. I used the SLK-800U from virtually the day it came out, with a Vantec Tornado fan, so the noise was driving me crazy. I decided to try a Volcano 11. The surface was about as even as a road full of potholes, and the trying to install it was a nightmare. I had more Arctic Silver 3 in my computer than I have ever had in all of my heatsinks combined. I finally got it installed, after serious lapping, and the temps were only about 4-7% better than the stock cooler. I removed the piece of [-peep-], shat on it, lit it, and danced about it in my back yard like an indian screaming, "I AM DELIVERED GO BACK INTO THE FIERY CHASM FROM WHENCE YE CAME THERMALTAKE!" I put the SLK-800U back on with the Smartfan 2 from the Volcano 11. It kicks ass.

eBay, kick ass!

lol!! ok then, SLK-800 it is, with smart case fan II and AS3. all soon to arrive at my house. thanx for the experience, albeit disturbing but helpful. :) oh one more thing is any one sure it will cool a 2500+ at 3000+ levels. it being a SLK-800 with smart case fan II all the way up.

I tried the Volcano 9+ with the coolmod, because it looked sweet and was supposed to cool well. I could only get about 250 mhz out of it. Not too happy.

I dropped in an SLK-800 with the same fan, and now I'm cruising around 2270-2280, but the fan is going pretty good. Remember that the 3000+ is 13.5x166 which is 2255mhz. Include that my memory is clocked faster because of the increased fsb, and it's running a fair bit faster than a stock 3000+.

I've just replaced my northbridge with a Thermaltake chrome orb chipset sink and fan, and moved the stock sink down to the southbridge, and now I'll probably be able to get even more performance because of the higher attainable fsb speeds. I'll let you know if I can break 2300mhz and still be prime95 stable. It's still up in the air for me.

Come on 30mhz.... that's all I want.... just a little more.....

lol, i know that feeling..."just a little more..."

btw, the volcano 7+ is the best one they've made, so if you haven't used that then you've been using their not-so-good products
it's also great because it's only $35 or so

ok first no the 3000+ is only 13x166.6 FSB not 13.5 and it is only 2.17GHz not 2.25 GHz you're thinking of the 2800+ T-Bred B. but thanx for the cooling info. i can't wait to OC my barton. it's gonna OWN!!

Are you sure? My retailer (who is quite knowledgeable, I might add) has this on their site:

"Athlon XP 3000+ 2.25 333FSB Socket A Barton (Retail)"

So, one of you is correct. In either case, I smoke them both. I only wish I could do as well as some of the T-Bred 1700+'s...

xp3000 is 2.167 Ghz...

anyone know if I can power the smart case fan through the motherboard header??? I know it comes with a 3 pin connector for the mobo. Is that enough juice?

It's been enough juice for me in the past. It should be fine for you too.

If the 3000+ is only 2.167, that's very good news for me. That means I'm running the equivalent of a 3200+ or more!

very sweet OC (3200+)! and yes the smart case fan II can be powered by the headers on your mobo. that's how both of my smart case fans are set up on my soyo dragon (KT400).
