Hi Guys,
Long time lurker on here for many a year. So I just got finished with my latest build:

  • ■ Thermaltake Core V1
    ■ AMD 7860K
    ■ Samsung EVO 850 256GB SSD
    ■ BeQuiet SystemPower 500W (Amazing by the way)
    ■ 8GB HyperX Fury Ram
    ■ ASROCK A88M-ITX/AC
    ■ Noctua NH L9i

It is far and away my favorite build to date. Handles gaming like a champ in my latest tests and as a day to day is lightning fast. Also and most importantly it is for all intents and purposes virtually silent. You have to strain to hear it.

I have one question, when I was building it I decided to mount the PSU facing up for a couple of reasons. The case has a large and very efficient 200mm fan drawing cool air into the entire case. Thus I maintained that the PSU would have better access to air should it need it from that flow as opposed to the vent which is about about and inch off of the ground.

Next this way dust is not an issue, I know there is a filter but it is easy to forget things of that sort over time.

Finally the motherboard mount is and empty space in the case so there is nothing but the board above the power supply. From the fan blades to the board its probably and inch but the interior of the case is like a fridge even when active, I removed the top last night while gaming and was amazed at just how cool the air inside the case was.

Anyway I am wondering has anyone else used this config. I see lots of posts online with people massively invested in one side or the other on this. My question is, would you think it will have any negative effects on the PSU over time in this config. I can't see it having any myself but no harm in asking.

Finally, I have yet to hear the PSU turn on the fan and if I place my hand behind the PSU while gaming, I feel no increased heat at all.

Thanks.

Heat is not going to be an issue in any circumstance with your build.
If you had a 6800k and dual 1080s in SLI then airflow becomes a bit more important.

I dare say with your build you could practically depend on convection to cool the thing. The orientation of the PSU is for airflow consideration - either way there is no risk of damage or anything of the sort.

Thanks for the answer, yeah that was my thought also. I have done lots of builds where heat was a potential issue but as I say the inside of the case is like a freezer on this one I am happy to say. Also owing to the large intake fan at the front there is a constant flow of cool air into the entire case, I'm fairly certain that even were the PSU fan on which to my mind has not happened yet, it would have a more abundant source of cool air from this source than the small are at the floor level.
