I was looking through amazon warehouse deals to ry to find a good deal on a power supply whenI stumbled across this gem <removed by moderator> It is a Thermaltake 700w smart PSU for only $9.67. This looks like an incredible deal, but is there a catch? Is this a notoriously bad psu? Just looking for some insight on the quality of this psu and whether i should go for it or not.

Please don't use shorten/abbreviated urls, use the full url

I would stay away for sure. I can't find any reviews from jonnyguru and co on these psu series. This is for sure a entry level psu, if not lower.

From what I can see, it is only 80 plus standard rated. Bare in mind this doesn't indicate the quality of the components inside, but when it's not even bronze rated you know it isn't the best of psu's. I would say this would work for a very low-end system, overclocking would certainly be a no-no.

According to the tier list on linustechtips, this is a tier 6 psu, which isn't the greatest at all. You want to be aiming for at least tier 3 on that list.

Could you tell us what you intend on building (The pc specs)? 700w is far too much for basic systems.

I know 700w its too much for what I was building, but i figured that for like $10 it was worth getting the extra "juice" if it was a decent cpu.

The specs so far are as follows:
cpu: i5 2400
mobo: generic lenovo board
ram: 8gb hynix kit
storage: 128gb boot drive and whatever mechanical drive i can find for main storage
gpu: still looking for either a gtx 770, hd 7970, hd 7950, or 660 ti if I'm tight for cash
psu: depending on the card anything 450w to 550w

Okay so I'd go with something like these:
I gave you a few options, there are more out there than this though. But these are some of the reliable ones.

CX550M
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01B72W0A2/?tag=pcpapi-20

Seasonic M12ii 520w
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151093

EVGA 500BQ
https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=110-BQ-0500-K1

As for graphics cards, a 750ti would probably be better. It's around the 660ti in performance and can be found at around $50/£50 while consuming less power, which is always nice.

That EVGA BQ is made by Andyson who also makes most of the Raidmax and Aerocool fire hazard/garbage grade psus. It's likely just as bad if not worse than the Thermaltake Smart, hard to say since that haven't had any professionally reviewed for some reason:sarcastic:. The BQ series is made by 2 OEMs Andyson and HEC and both are OEMs that should be avoided.

For future reference here's a great tool for reviews and OEMs.
