Thief 2 - Can't reinstall - help!

Placing the installation disk in my drive, I get four options --
Install DirectX, View Readme, Find Updates, and Quit. Nothing about
actually installing the game. What's dumb is, I've played this game on
this very computer in the past, so I know it is possible to install
it. But how?

I've looked through the archives of this group and have found several
people who faced this same problem, but none of them seemed to have
received public answers. Perhaps someone can tell me how to get a nice
solid "install" button when I put in the Thief 2 CD.

Thanks in advance.

Eric

Did you try cleaning the HKCU\Software, HKLM\Software, and
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall sections in the
registry of any Thief 2 or Looking Glass entries? (You don't actually
need any references to Thief 2 in the registry at all for it to run
properly.) I'm assuming there is either a key there that the installer is
checking and refusing to install if it already finds an entry.

Maybe it's something simpler but that's what I'd check first.

If you're afraid of mucking up the registry you can use a tool like jv16
Power Tools (to muck it up even faster, heh.)

use regcleaner - remove all references to thief 2.
check both the software tab and the uninstall menu tab.
if that doesnt work - consider whats changed in your system since you last
played t2. ppl that have updated to 56.72 drivers cant play t2 so i've
heard.

JV16 Power Tools is just the newer version of RegCleaner (which is more
difficult to find). Anyhow, I thought the problem was with installing it,
not playing it, so the video drivers shouldn't make a difference at that
point.

That's what I like -- good, solid, practical advice. Went right out
and downloaded PowerTools, got rid of every reference to Thief (and
1,000 other dead items as well), rebooted, and put the Thief2 CD back
in.

It still didn't work.

I get the same four options, and one of them is not "Install the
Game." I'm absolutely puzzled.

Any further advice?

Explore the CD and start setup.exe on the CD. You're trying to install with
CD 1 right?

This happens if you try to install from disk 2. Make sure you have the
right disc in the drive.
