Thief/Wizard Good Bad or Ugly?

Archived from groups: alt.games.neverwinter-nights (More info?)

As with many multi-classes, I'm sure you could find a way to make it WORK,
but I honestly don't see the point of a thief/wizard.

A thief could spot traps and locks....but so can many of the wizard
familiars/summons/henchmen. A thief could disarm and unlock those traps and
locks...but spellcasters get two spells that do exactly that, even if you
HAVEN'T spotted them. At that, the spells in question unlock/detrap EVERY
lock and trap within a pretty good radius.

A thief, of course, gets some nice things having to do with dodging, hiding,
and the ever-popular sneak attack. Spellcasters, however, shouldn't have to
be dodging, have invisibility spells for hiding, and if you're fighting up
close with one for things like sneak attack, you need to rethink your
spellcaster strategy.

My verdict: you might be able to make one that would work in the sense of
not dying all the time, but a full theif or a full wizard would far
outstripe it very very quickly.

I've played the combination. Spent most of my Rogue pts. on Use Magic Item,
Tumble and Hide. It's not a power build but is fun to roleplay.

It also allows the use of bard, monk and paladin items. Actually, if your
pts are high enough you can use most anything in the game.

If you want the rogue skill and spells have you considered a bard? Very
similar skill list and you would have a higher spell caster level. I
wouldn't go with thief/wizard unless it was for a prestige class.

Worked very well. Most levels were wizard but I took thief
levels when my thieving skills weren't up to par.

One really nice one: UMD. I had an AC in excess of 50.

Anything that doesn't require a feat or class ability.

Not only clerical items but how about monk items? Boots of the
sun soul. Not to mention the AC bonus from tumble. Once I got epic
mage armor, most things could only hit me on a 20. Lone monsters I
would generally take on with my crossbow and not waste spells on them.
