wothcer chaps, hopefully just a quick question here. Where do things you've
stolen go if you get arrested? Problem is the thieves guild sent me out to
steal the redoran cookbook. Not a problem, nicked it wondered off all
nonchalant like but decided to check a few other locked chests on the way. I
was caught by a guard breaking into one of those and as the fine was only 5
gold, I paid it and thought nothing more about it, until I get back to the
thieves and realise that the book has gone. Any idea where it may turn up?

Naturally the guards don't want to carry it around forever, so they dump
it in the nearest (to them,
not necessarily to the 'thief') 'evidence' chest or
barrel. They are marked 'evidence' barrel or
*-chest. You found one in the courtyard in the
census and exise office when you started. They
are typically located in the military garrisons or
forts somewhere. The specific container is
randomly picked, I think.

nice one, I have seen those evidence chests around the place but I haven't
tried opening them yet, thinking they were going to be part of some task to
get someone out of jail or some such.
Just remembered another question I was going to ask. Some quests for the
imperial garrison (somewhere up north Gnsis maybe?), I need to find proof
that one of the soldiers killed widow somethingorothers husband and I needed
proof about spies in the garrison. I managed to find both but when
conversing with the head-bloke up there, he can't determine the difference
between one proof and the other. I try to give him one proof and he keeps on
talking about the one I've given him. Looks like a fault in the game but I'm
unsure about downloading a patch as the website says not to download
morrowind patches if you've already installed tribunal. Anyone else run into
this problem.
While I'm here why not check out my new music at
http://www.garageband.com/artist/foster not elder-scrolls related but I'm
quite pleased about not getting poor reviews so I'm trying to advertise it a
bit and you seem like a bunch of top geezers.

A few points:
1) The barrel in courtyard of the Census and Excise office in Seyda
Neen is just a barrel (That happens to have a script attached). In
Seyda Neen stolen goods are placed in a chest that is located in that
first room that you enter when you start the game.
2) The six stolen goods containers are not randomly picked, they are in
the same place every game. If they were randomly picked how could you
be sure he found one in the Census and Excise office?
3) All of the containers used for the purpose of storing stolen goods
are chests, and they are labled 'Chest marked "Evidence"'.

You don't need "proof" for the second quest. IIRC you need "talos
cult" or "conspiracy against the emperor" (It could be something else,
but it isn't "proof").

Did you download the tribunal patch?

And, for your information, the six are at:

- Seyda Neen, Census & Excise Office
- Fort Pelagiad, Pelagiad
- Fort Hawkmoth, Ebonheart
- Fort Moonmoth, near Balmora
- Fort Buckmoth, near Ald'ruhn
- Fort Darius, Gnisis

I believe there is a seventh "Evidence" chest in Fort Frostmoth,
Solstheim, "Bloodmoon" Expansion Set (and possibly one in Mournhold
somewhere in the "Tribunal" Expansion Set).

Each of them is locked, and there is a guard (who may or may not be
named) that is watching. You'll have to be VERY careful when trying to
get your stuff back - or taunt the guards into a fight, then kill them
in "self-defence".

There is no chest in Fort Darius, and your missing the one in the
fighters guild in the Wolverine Hall near Sadrith Mora.

The tribunal chest is in the Royal Palace jail.

Amulet of 80% Chameleon means never having to say you're sorry, I suppose!

I know their location are the same, but where the
stolen goods are placed, is random to a certain degree

That makes significantly more sense. I'm not sure if it's true or not,
but it's possible. My general experience is that it's not random (being
in the same spot usually gives the same result), but it is very
difficult to predict. For example, if you're in the Bitter Coast, your
stuff won't appear in Sadrith Mora, but it may be difficult to tell if
it's the Moonmoth, Hawkmoth, Pelagaid, or the Seyda Need chest that you
need to go to.

It's my understanding that Stolen stuff is placed in the nearest
Evidence Chest, and I've found that to be true the several dozen times
my various characters have had to surrender their stolen loot... That
always made it easier for my characters to find, and Steal Back their
Stolen loot. ^_^

That's my 2¢,

The Things are in the next Fort, I've hear.
I think the Game has a big "Owner-Error".

Like this:
You hunt Cave Rats to get Ratmeat.
Then you go to a Trader and sell it.
But if you have no Luck, you sell it at a Trader who have his ID at the
Ratmeat.
Then he say "That's mine." you lost the Meat and maybe get a Bounty for steal
the Meat.

I hope Bethesda will change that in the next TES-Game.

The game lumps all items of a type together in terms of tracking
whether they are stolen. So, if you ever steal a Ratmeat, then all
Ratmeat will forever after be labeled as stolen. You can see the tags
the game keeps on things by going into console mode (type "~") then
typing "tfh" (toggle full help). Close the console window with the ~
key.
