Things disappearing in Windows 8?

I've spent 12 hours today working on a project, made sure it was saved and was restarting my pc before doing a backup. Now it has restarted there is absolutely no trace of my files, and the program I used. This laptop is also only 2 days old! Have my files gone for good?

At your Start Screen, type the name of your lost file, and see if anything appears under 'Files' in the Right Margin. What software did you use to create your work? Again, typing the name of your software at the Start Screen should reveal it's whereabouts, Right click on the appropriate App and choose 'Pin to taskbar' or 'Start' whichever you prefer...
