hi i am thinkng of building a server using an old Gigabyte GA-H55M-SV2 rev 1.3 board using a 1156 socket getting the board refurbished as was bought 2nd hand with capasitor issues. The question is i am building as a gaming server to hold games like minecraft. KF2 garrysmod, TF2 & many mpore games wondering best cpu to go with. As i got tri channel ram lying round that i am going to use was going the xeon way of going to get the most out of my threads on my processor i can go i3 of i5 but seen xeon cores lying round for about the same price & the ram i thought i am better to go with xeon for the tri channel ability. i am using windows 10 pro to run the set up & going to throw a couple hdds in but going use cloud where i can tho. All i need is ideas to go with the processor to suit as i want something decent as got power source as going to run it as remote server access gaming wise as i might use it for other purposes in time . i already know going to have people say why i am going this way but the board owes me nothing & end of the day its an i series board which is going to be reflashed & refurbished to suit my needs & got ram & all my parts to make my server as i refurbish desktops & any spares i keep for my own set up cooling wise i got it set up customs made cooling i have build a few decent set ups now just my first server but wana build a strong server that's going to handle what i throw at it

Ahh, my bad - your text is a little hard to read as it's all in one paragraph.

One suggestion is that W10 should be okay, but WServer (or Linux - very good for most games' servers) may be preferable - as it's server, getting a server O/S at the start tends to be really useful later on as you expand what you use it for.

As to the hardware, the Xeon would be a plan - and you need as many (real, HT doesn't count) cores as possible. I presume as you are building a server that you are fixing the capacitor issues on the board first?

yeah i found a Gigabyte repair centre in nz this board owes me nothing but worth repairing as wasn't much wrong with it, i was going to use it for another gaming build but thought against it as but i dont wana its dying on my stepsons while gaming rather be a server as it dies it doesn't fase me but am going xeon mainly as they are i7s & use a decent OS as if i need to migrate files can cloud them remotely to my laptop or other desktops running on 10pro i use 10pro as its a mean OS & i want a decently secure set up to avoid hackers & cheaters & microsofts windows defender is prety good antivirus end of the day its not used for gaming its server purposes mainly & multipul server duties so basic but budget, as have a lack of $ & i build exchange desktops & rekit them to suit & migrate any decent parts to my collection. Its not going to be the best looking server but it bare bones build & i be running modded fans i customized to suit an old case old desktops make great harvesters to make a beast of a server
