Thinking of upgrading to a 7970

it might be refurbed (vid card shop sells gtx 260's for 60 quid). but it would be a massive upgrade over the gtx 560ti just make sure you got enough power to feed that bad boy

I have the power! I just havent kept myself up to date in the pc world since I built my machine last year. I heard something about a bios update on tue 7970s (i think). Does it apply to that card?

Don't bother with any BIOS update, it just raises the clockspeed a little bit which you can actually do yourself.

You have a good system, if you want to upgrade, I see no problem.

Yeah all that bios bullcrap is too complicated.. well for me anyway. Looks like you have the power. you know what im thinking 😉 keep the gtx 560 as a physx card hehe

Thanks. Out of curiosity and without spending hours doing research like I would normally, how does the 7970 compare with the 680?

At stock speeds, its usually a bit slower, in some games their similar, in a few games it even beats the 680, it's also cheaper than a 680. However, once you consider overclocking the 7970 is a beast and for the price, it makes sense why the 680 is getting less popular these days (that and you can get 90%+ of it's performance from a card that is 80% of the price, the GTX670)

So armed with that info.... Gtx 670 or 7970?

Sounds like Im getting a 7970. Thanks for the help guys.

Don't forget to factor in the extra features the nvidia cards have. It might not be a big deal to you, just want you to be aware of them, I don't have time right now to explain them or find a good link, maybe someone else or you can do some research on it. Recent tests also show the radeons have higher frame latency in most games, which can result in some choppy frames.
