You're advised to disassemble the laptop and then inspect the cooler assembly for any dust and debris, perhaps thee aforementioned gremlins might be impeding the rotation of your laptop's fan blades. You might want to also see if the fan is trying to move when you power up the laptop. You can try and rewove the cooling fan entirely and then give it a clean with a fine bristled paint brush.
I had a similar issue crop up on a Dell laptop, one where the laptop suffered from a horrible power surge, ruined the motherboard. I found that out late after client asked me to replace the fan with a brand new one, replaced with known working fan, no dice after first 5 seconds, then client tells me of the power...
