We have the need to print on localy attached serial POS
printers through TS on 2000 server. I found information that
Windows 2000 TS are not able to do that by default and 2003
are. Is that really true? (becouse, there *IS* an option in Windows 2000
Terminal Services Configuration to allow COM port redirection [RDP-
TCP/Client Settings]). If so, are there any third party addons
available for TS on 2000 server which would make it possible? Which ones?
Any free ones maybe?

Windows 2000 *does* support local printers connected to a COM
port. No problem with that.

You might have to create a custom printer mapping file (mapping
the client driver to a native driver on the server) to make the
printer autocreate.

Windows 2000 does *not* support COM-port redirection for other
devices than printers. This feature is supported in Windows 2003.
If you need this in Windows 2000, one add-on that does this is
Citrix MetaFrame.
But as I said, you won't need this for printer redirection.

Thank you, Vera.

Could you please elaborate a little bit what does this "create
a custom printer mapping file" mean?

Humm...How do Windows 2000 know if there is a printer or some other kind
of device connected to clients physicall COM port?
The thing is that serial POS printers used on TS clients are not
installed like "classic" printers, they cannot be seen under
"Printers and Faxes". Those printers just expect data for them
on COM port.

That's explained in detail in KB article 239088, better than I can
express it.

As far as I have understood it, the printer redirection is handled
at the level of the spooler services. That's why the TS doesn't
bother which port the printer is connected to, it is the local
spooler that handles that part of the printing process.

OK, then you might have a problem. Do you already have a W2K
server in place? Should be easy to try it out.
