This device, cd/dvd drive cannot start (code 10) vista

Several years ago I purchased a hp laptop (HP G60-230US Notebook PC) with Vista - Upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium within the year. Lost the use of CD/DVD. Get Device cannot start - Code 10 message. Have checked driver and have updated, but computer does not recognize that the DVD player exists. It shows in the BIOS. I have tried Microsoft Fix-It to no avail...I have read article after article. Oh, for the days when you could go to a person and figure out the problem!

can you boot off the cd drive? with something like a linux bootable cd? or memtest86?
trying to differentiate between a windows problem and a 'broken' drive
