For some unexplained reason, lately every time I try to choose a program to open ANY kind of file with by right-clicking and choosing "choose default program", I get this error message:

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.

so I went and checked it. All my program associations and format associations are still setup as they were before, but the error persists. Any idea what's going on, and how I might be able to fix it?

Solution
If reinstalling and selecting programs correct in Default Programs doesn't help, a nice tool for manually configuring file associations is called FileTypesMan. https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/file_types_manager.html

If you can't even open txt files I would load up FileTypesMan and see which program .txt files are linked to. If the link is correct and you still can't open a txt file with windows notepad then there is something wrong, either corruption or malware.

Malware can also mess with your file extensions associations and stop you from loading any programs.

Windows key -> cmd -> sfc /scannow can fix issues with corruption in Windows system files.
the program exist, but windows doesnt recoginize them. try re install any program you are using to open those files. Also, try choosing default program, instead of just choosing it, and see if the problem persist. If it doesnt, its a windows problem. If it shows same error, its the program.
