Hello everyone,

Let me start off by saying that i'm not great with computers... i wouldn't call myself a complete noob, but please feel free to call me such if you think it's deserved 😛

So this is what i've been trying to find a solution to...
I recently installed a new graphics card which 'seems' to have caused an audio hardware problem.

Before installation, my rear panel audio and mic jacks, (into which my modest stereo speakers and mic are connected) were working just fine.
Now that my new graphics card is up and running, my speakers produce no sound and my mic cannot capture my frail voice.
I checked some settings within control panel and discovered that my pc now thinks I have my speakers plugged into the front panel audio jack when they are in fact plugged into the rear jack.

I'm confused as to how my pc can think that anything is plugged into the front panel jack/s, as they are not even connected to my motherboard. (never use them, so left them disconnected)

I've checked my bios settings to make sure audio is enabled, which it is.
Have uninstalled, then reinstalled the realtek hd driver software.
Have checked speakers are working by plugging into a diffrent source... no problems there.
Have uninstalled the HDMI audio portion from the graphics card driver install (as suggested in another forum)

I also had a teamview session with a friend who's more computer savvy than I.
During this session he was able to hear himself on his own system (via teamspeak's return signal) suggesting that this is a hardware configuration/setup issue.
But unfortunately we were not able to get to the bottom of it... (probably didn't even get below the surface)

It is my fond hope that a small group of you will have read this, and can offer an old man some suggestions on how to correct this situation so that i may once again hear the glorious sounds of the 'New Eden' universe.

If there's information you think will be useful, then please do ask for it... but keep in mind that I may not know where to get it from, so some directions would be most helpfull in helping me to help you to help me. :)

Warm Regards
The Monkey.

Right click the sound icon on your taskbar and go to playback devices. Play some music or something with sound and one of those devices should be showing bars light up. Just select it as default. If none are showing, where are you looking that says it's detecting something in the front panel? The realtek audio manager?

The card - http://www.asus.com/uk/Graphics_Cards/EAH5850_DirectCU2DIS1GD5/ (with 6 and 8 pin power hookups connected)

The Mobo - http://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/M5A78LM_LX_V2/

CPU - AMD FX 4350 4.2ghz

OS - Windows 7 64bit

550w power supply

Speakers ( acer stereo, plugged into rear panel jack) is set as default and the bars light up when i play a sound file.
Right click within same window/properties/shows them as plugged into front panel jack as does the realtek manager (indicated by the front panel jack being lit up) Which i find strange as I've don't use the front panel which is not even connected (physically) to the mobo.
