Ok, Ill give you the facts up front.

1) I know computers but have never built a computer from the ground up.
2) I bought a build from Dell, didnt do what I wanted so returned it and bought a couple components

This is what I have:

--Radeon HD 4830
--AMD Phenom II X4 940 Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Black Edition Processor - Retail

I have about $300 or so left for my build and no clue what is the best way to go.

What do you recommend to get this computer up and running? I also plan on running Xp on this.

Thanks!

If you're on windows Xp you really don't need more than 2GB unless you do some really heavy photo editing/multitasking and even then since im assuming you have the 32bit version of XP you won't be able to use more than 4GB of TOTAL memory (including video card) so it will most likely be that you can only see ~3.5GB of system RAM.

I cross checked the prices between Amazon and Newegg. I purchased the case and the hard drive from Amazon and got free shipping on both. I purchased the other 4 items from New egg and the total cost including shipping for all came to $348.74! The free shipping on the case from Amazon saved $60!!

Thank you all for your help on this! I will either have a fun computer or will be submitting more questions on how to fix a blown up computer.

Thanks again all!

Wow, pretty freakin good system for $348 tax in and shipped (minus the MIRs). Of course this doesn't include the CPU or GPU, but still.

I never get free shipping no matter what I order.

I don't know the difference, but beware that the Power PC & Cooling power supply linked above is the Dell replacement version.

I guess it should fit though, but maybe cabling is a bit different.

The video card was $85 and the CPU was $190 total. I am very happy with this system as it looks on paper and the final cost at this point.

I will keep an eye on the power supply and post some notes on here. I have no clue how to tell if a power supply will fit a case or not. I see that this power supply fit the case on the $625.00 gaming machine they built with a non dell case and on Amazon it shows people have bought this power supply along with the case also.

I will know in about 3-5 days! lol
