My business partner and I had previously decided to make a forum board
jsut to screw around with. Now, there's ppl form City Of Heroes coming
on, and we were thinking about making it a semi-official board for CoH.
I'm hoping that many of you might come to use it, as I know you are on
this mail group hehe... but give it a shot i guess..... we're starting to
build Supergroup Pages and such. So if you guys and girls want, come look!

Uh, yeah, right.

As opposed to the official boards.cityofheroes.com boards, the
city_of_heroes livejournal community, alt.games.coh...and I'm sure I
could find half a zillion others if I just searched.

Now granted, the offficial CoH board is a bit harshly overmoderated
from time to time...but if we want to talk about the game in a less
restrictive environment, there are always those other places, which
were created by people with more focussed intent than "to screw around
with."

Heh. I mostly stopped reading the official boards because they aren't
moderated nearly enough. :)

Yeah, some people are just obsessed with the idea that actually
enforcing the forum rules now and then is "over moderated"...

*Sigh*. As a former moderator on several venues, I can testify that there
are ALWAYS @ssholes who think anything they want to do should be permitted
and will turn a forum into a flaming wreck with their screaming about
totalitarian moderators.

When a moderator actually has the power to plonk or ban a user, it's one
thing. But when you try to moderate an essentially open forum that requires
some third party to take action, if any action is even available, it's a
nightmare.

Ayuh. People seem to think it makes them "kewl" to protest "the
man"... Even when "the man" is as simple as a forum mod. I mean,
seriously, I'm sure their "fight the power" crusade has much bigger
fish to fry.

Putting a forum board on a commercial web site is ad-trolling, pretty
much no matter what your motivations are. I'm a little surprised at the
harshness of the responses here, but only a little.

There are few CoH forums besides those on the official web site and this
NG, but there doesn't seem to be much interest for any, either. I
considered adding forums to HEROICA!, and still might for bind and
technical discussion, but as far as general CoH chat etc. - the official
boards pretty much sweep it all up, even with their faults and problems.

One of the biggest faults with the web is that too many people do things
just cuz they can... technical and expense hurdles are zero to nil. Just
like the early days of desktop publishing, when every newsletter used 17
fonts and little graphic biff-bam-booms all over, just cuz you CAN do
something doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Your thought unrelated to ad-trolling is appreciated. Sorry to say not
much else is...

That is a good idea, however, as you can no doubt notice by the type of
responses that you have received, may not be well appreciated.

If you truly want to make a board that will stand out from the countless
other boards that are out there (both the official ones as well as the
other ones out there) you need to have it specialize in something. Give
people a reason to go there. Something that they can't get from any of the
other ones out there. (or can't get as easily)

I'm one of those "negative bastards".

I wrote what I did because I actually went and visited your pathetic
forums.

A bunch of generic forums, with posts you aren't even allowed to see if
you're not registered and a whopping 138 registered users.

Oh wow, a whole 138 people on the forums, of which what, 2 or 3 happen
to also play CoH?

Yeah I can see a whole lot of information being shared there that would
make it worthwhile registering on your utterly amateur site

To top it off, you decide to come here and advertise that you're
"thinking" about maybe adding a coh forum to your bunch of other generic
forums and add the lunacy of being "semi official".

Wheee, we can have a coh forum stuffed in between the lounge, the hottie
gallery, the poetry corner and job listings, where you're 138 users can
post about playing.

You have no information about coh, not even a forum, WTF are you doing
wasting our time?

You are exactly the kind of halfwit posting something totally offtopic
that NEEDS to get moderated on all forums.

I especially loved privacy policy on your site, written in what appears
to be latin.

Just what is it you're hiding?
