So I'm not 100% sure I'm ready to go through with a new build, which will include a new monitor and tip up close to $2k with no new GPU.... but I have money burning a hole in the wallet and current build is 5 years old now. For starters I do casual random gaming on the PC, but primarily game on my PS5 (yes, one of the lucky ones). I will probably play a few games every few years and I'm a sucker for wanting the latest greatest tech.

My current build is in my sig, and I will only be bringing over my 1050ti and the intel SSD600. I am building with a plan to add an rtx when they're available and reasonably priced. I will also try and sell the current chip, memory and maybe mobo.

Anyhow, consider this a mid to low level gaming build with a need to occasionally transcode plex movies to my home theatre. I have no intentions of overclocking.

OS and program storage
Corsair Force MP600 M.2 2280 1TB PCI-Express Gen 4.0 x4 NVMe 3D TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CSSD-F1000GBMP600

Additional media storage (note here that I have space for 3 m2 drives on this board, and for $15 more, I'm going with m2 vs 2.5", but open to thoughts on why not to do this)
WD Blue 3D NAND 2TB Internal SSD - SATA III 6Gb/s M.2 2280 Solid State Drive - WDS200T2B0B

PSU (calcs say this is more than I need, but the cost is $10 more over the 550 so might as well)

1)Depending on POV:
-Didn't go big enough on the cpu cooler for the selected cpu.
-Cpu too big for the selected cpu cooler.

2)Experience with Gen 4 NVMe SSD will vary. You might run into cooling issues with it.

That's what I notice for now...

Stock settings, Evo 212 won't hurt it, just won't boost as long as a better cooler would allow.

I agree, unless you have more storage drives that are that fast. Little to be gained. PCIe 3.0 NVMe drive will get you the same desktop experience.

How much does the CPU cooler weigh?

Not sure, why? I'm not overclocking. Just running stock. With my current setup I just used the intel provided fan, this one just doesn't come with one.

Even running everything stock on the cpu?

Was hoping the highly rated ssd with the heat sink would be fine...

Is there a better similarly priced cooler?

Are you saying not to bother with the pci4.0 ssd vs a 3.0? On paper they're more impressive for sure.

Well, almost spending $400 on 3TB of SSD. 1TB at PCIe 4.0 speeds, and a SATA III SSD.

Swap the money around a little and you can have 3TB of PCIe 3.0 storage. (Just picked out some drives below, Intel is a good 2TB, Samsung is a great 1TB, but a little pricey, Adata SX6000 Pro as an alternative)

Black edition Evo 212 is $5 cheaper right now.

Even running everything stock on the cpu?
What's considered 'stock' for these Intel cpus is... it's one big mess. Blame Intel for not really trying to enforce their own guidelines.
Some motherboards follow Intel's default specs, some don't, and some can't even meet them.
I'm the what if guy with more of a negative outlook, and in the worst case, that cooler doesn't appear adequate for the 11700K. I'd feel more at ease pairing that cooler with an 11600-non K.
That's my opinion - Eximo has a more positive outlook for it.

Was hoping the highly rated ssd with the heat sink would be fine...
IDK, I see quite a few 'Gen 4 SSD, Why so hot', threads here and there... The heatsink only seems to do so much for them - they still need some active cooling.
From what I've seen so far, I'd suggest not installing it in the slot above the gpu if you can help it, as that seems to be the worst place for them in terms of active cooling.
If they run too hot, they lose whatever little speed advantage they had over Gen 3 NVMe and SATA SSD. Kind of a waste, when Gen 3 is still good, plenty fast, and not as troublesome to cool.

I appreciate that. I wasn't able to find a non-k on newegg and would rather buy a cheaper non-k if they exist as like I said, I don't intend to overclock.

11700K is also $30 cheaper from Amazon

Aside from my recent ram purchase, Newegg has been rather pricey of late.

B&H photo don't move as fast. CPU prices seem to stagnate with them more than others. So when it has been cheap, they'll have them. But be warned, they use FedEx and require signatures for delivery. Had to take a day off to get my CPU last week.

The 11400 and 11400F got a lot of coverage as good budget gaming CPUs, out of stock everywhere.

ha figures. According to the plex website I really need the i7 to transcode a 4K remux though and that’s part of why I’m building.

Depending on the future video card you might need to change to the SC case the C ,limits the card to 315mm.
Also might consider more watts for the power supply.

I saw that too. It’s unlikely I spend the extra $200 for a 3 fan gpu over a 2 fan... but solid point.

Yeah I was just using Newegg as a build site. Although the cpu was really the only item I’ve seen cheaper. Death stranding comes with the Newegg cpu, not sure about Amazon.

Just asking, I'm afraid that a heavy, vertically installed cooler would bend the motherboard in case of a sudden move.
The 212 EVO isn't a particularly heavy HSF and the backplate will help stiffen the immediate socket area to spread forces around. I wouldn't worry too much about it, there are much heavier HSFs out there and they aren't causing major issues either. My C2D has had a 212+ on it for something like 12 years, been moved around a couple of times including car rides during moves between apartments, still working fine today. I seem to have lost my 212+'s original fan (been running my old i5 with a fan-less 212+), so I may end up getting a 212 EVO (v1) for my shiny new i5.

Seems expensive for what you get. The heatpipes on the outside edge aren't going to be doing a whole lot. Something like a Dark Rock Pro at that point, or a Noctua NH12.

I used a 212 evo on an overclocked 4770k (4.3Ghz) at 1.35volts. I did have push pull fans on it from Corsair, but still, it was quite effective. Should be fine for a stock CPU, even one that has short bursts of high power consumption.

How silent does the build need to be, maybe also a thing to consider. Saw this cooler for a good price,
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/kbhj4D/cryorig-cpu-cooler-a40
but is not the most silent.
This Thermalright macho also always performs good,
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/jr6qqs/thermalright-macho-revc-8497-cfm-cpu-cooler-macho-revc
is more silent.

thanks silence isn't an issue really. But my build is no lights, no bells and whistles discrete in appearance approach.

I'm currently reusing a 212+ on my 11400 with 110W long-term PL after slapping one of my case fans on it, temperature peaks at 75C in Cinebench R23 MT, stays around 70C most of the time. The good old 212+ still works like a charm for 100W-ish loads.

pc part picker is a great site. They noted that the corsair 650rx has only 1 eps 4 pin and the z590 has an additional 4pin... it notes it's unlikely to be needed, but could be an issue.

So funny thing is that the cheaper rm (non-x) 650 has 2 EPS connectors, but not the better components or quieter fan. The rmx750 (2018) has 2 EPS cables, and so does the rmx650 (2021), which doesn't seem to be available anywhere right now, so I might go with the older 750.
