Threadripper 1950x or i9 7900x for mainly gaming

Hello,
i am an enthusiast gamer, i'm searching for an high-end desktop processor to power my gtx 1080ti. I mainly play the newest triple a games on my 3440x1440p Ultrawide so when a new beefy grahicscard comes out it will be bought also.
But now to my question. I am using a ryzen 7 1700 @ 3.8 Ghz right now but i want to switch to the high end cpus.
It should be mainly for gaming but i am also a multitasker with lots of tabs in chrome. i also want to start game capturing.
i heard that the threadripper is a beast at heavy use like rendering and professional workloads but isnt as fast as 4.5 ghz i9 7900x even when its overclocked to 4ghz which looks like its border.
I will use my current Corsair 3200Mhz Ram (4x8Gb)

My budget is about 1300€
AMD TR 1950X + Asus ROG x399 gaming-e = 1180€
I9 7900x + Asus Prime x299 Deluxe = 1250€

Thanks for you help :)

SLI/CF is falling out of favor. As you noticed, the 1070s scaled badly. Guess what? They pretty much all scale badly now.

OC'ing is up in the air. Most of the Intel CPUs can hit 4.5-5.0GHz. Ryzen seems to be limited to 3.5-3.9GHz. As mentioned above Ryzen 2.0 is coming which is supposed to up the clock speeds some, so expect even more improvements as Ryzen hits 4.0+ As he correctly said, waiting for it is a good idea.

You pick the first/only answer as best? That's odd. (I'm not asking you pick mine as best. But you should let some answers come in before picking the best one. If you are really asking, how do you know his is best?)

Have you seen the gaming reviews for TR? They aren't good. If you are worried about gaming, I'd get the best gaming CPU. 8700K or 8600K. I wouldn't bother with those other CPUs. They aren't good gaming chips.

youre right... sorry im new to this forum. Yeah i know the 8700K is the best and fastest gaming cpu but im searching something in the high end segment and not the mainstream segment so 8700k and 8600K are out.

what do you think of the i9 7900K?

So why not get it? You also said;

It sounds like you want the best gaming CPU, so why not buy it? It's not really a "mainstream" CPU. It's the upper end of CPUs.

Again, it's not a gaming CPU.

BF1 is all tied. Deus X has the Ryzen chips winning, with the 7900 "loosing" to the 7700. I think GTA5 shows the biggest lead for the 7900, but even there all the CPUs are above 60FPS, with none of the CPUs above 144 or even 120FPS. Most of the time it's simply as fast as the other CPUs. (hitman, middle earth, etc.) Normally I would say good for it. But the 7900 costs a lot more than the other CPUs, more so when you consider system cost. Add in the higher TDP and this isn't a good showing for the 7900. At least as a gaming CPU. Just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's the best tool for the job.

cause i planing to record my games and maybe also stream my games without that much fps lost so i dont know if the 8700k would fit for this use. As said im currently mainly game on my pc but i planing to do more like Videos und maybe Streaming when i have new and better internet connection. So im not sure if the 8700K ist enough for this

Tom's recently tested that as well.

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/game-streaming-encoding-coffee-lake-ryzen,review-34144-6.html

If you seek the highest in-game performance while you stream, Intel's Coffee Lake-based Core i7-8700K is a good fit. The Ryzen 7 1800X is also competitive and tends to offer better streaming performance...If you're really serious about streaming and gaming at the same time, the highest-end desktop CPUs are an option. Just expect to pay dearly for them. Most enthusiasts are better served by mainstream processors. Intel's Core i9 models generally provide better performance than the Threadripper 1950X, but they cost more, too. The 1950X is a solid value choice that also offers a diverse range of capabilities.

Looking at BF1, the 8700K at 1080 manages to hit ~140FPS and according to the review manages to encode 100% of the frames. Compare that to the i9 7900 which also scored ~140FPS, I don't see the reason to get the i9. Looking at GTA 5 and they both score around 90FPS. No comments about % of frames encoded this time. Compare the games, but from those two it doesn't seem like the i9 is worth the extra money.

okay this looks really god for the 8700K, one more thing wich concerns me when i should ever buy a second graphics card again, i was on an 970 sli and then to a 1070 sli. But the 1070s in sli scaled bad and so i changed this to one 1080ti. Would the 8700K be fast enough for 2 high end cards like 1080ti? And what about overclocking which clockspeed is likey to achieve with the 8700k?

The TR4 variants are often slower than R5-1600-based rigs....; more cores is not always better, and, paying extra for a TR4 mainboard and even more for a CPU is somewhat ludicrous, given a Z370/8700K rig for $700 less or so....

Were I living a secondary life loving Cinebench and actual rendering instead of gaming with streaming, perhaps even R7-1700-1800X would merit consideration, as they are reasonably priced, and still capable of gaming well.

7900X is what I'd buy for rendering and secondary gaming if someone else was paying for it!

7900X is better for gaming and streaming.

Also, don't go with the Prime Deluxe as it's a trash board. Go with motherboards released in September or later. Those have better VRMs and better VRM cooling. Also, consider delidding. You'd be able to push your 7900X to 4.8GHz+.
