Three Monitors - DVI-D to VGA adapter?

Hi there, I'm AyJay. I recently bought a custom-made PC, the PC has a AMD Radeon HD 6450 graphics card with three video outputs (DVI-D, VGA, HDMI) - I've currently got a two monitor setup, with the HDMI and the VGA, but I only have a monitor with a VGA input spare.

Could I buy an adapter which plugs into my DVI-D port and allows me to use a VGA to VGA wire to my monitor? If so, could you tell me what it is called; or send me a link to it on eBay?

You'd want something like this:

It has a Male DVI-D which you'll plug into your PC. You should then be able to plug a VGA cable from the monitor to your adapter, which has a Female VGA. You should look around for that exact type of adapter, though for a better price. On ebay, you could get lucky and get it for a dollar on auction

You can't use a simple adapter it would have to be a active converter.

Could you explain? I'm not saying you're wrong, I'd just like to know the difference and I'm sure it'd help AyJay11 as well 😛 I was never big on video output.

That kind of adapter will not work. Its a simple passthrough adapter. Im not sure why they sell these(probably because people keep buying them), because they dont work on actual DVI-D ports. DVI-D only uses a digital signal and VGA is analog only so going from DVI-D to VGA requires something that can actually convert the digital signal to analog which that adapter is not capable of. Those types of adapters only work with DVI-I since DVI-I carries both digital and analog signals.

Ah, yes. Analog to Digital and vice/versa. So an active DVI-D to VGA is the only way if both signals are different? And a DVI-I to VGA adapter would only work if the card/board's output was DVI-I, correct? Since it carries both?
