thumb buttons on new MX518 mouse

Hi all,

I have always used the thumb button on my mouse for jumping. Using my
old mice, a Mouseman Wheel (CW47 with ball ons PS2) and an Ifeel optical
mouse I can rest my thumb on the button while having a firm grip around
the whole mouse the same time.

The newer mice from Logitech are designed differently: the thumb
button(s) are now placed slighly above the curve in which the thumb
rests, so to use them you have to change you thumbs position. This does
prevent reflexive movements.
I purchased a new MX518 with all the 1600dpi and other goodies, but the
configuration is as described and in that sense useless to me.

I wonder what the guys at Logitech were thinking when they designed this
so-called 'gaming mouse'. What is the use of a firm ergonomical grip if
the user is forced to change his grip everytime he wants to use a
side-button. Aren't the buttons supposed to be available _all_ the time,
even if not used for jumping?

Anyway, I was curious what you guys use the thumb-button for and, if not
for jumping, what button _do_ you use for jumping?

I appears that my Mouseman and Ifeel are about the last mice that have
the thumb-button placed were it should be IMHO, namely under the thumb.

Any comment is welcome,

Ursa..

I use the two thumb buttons on my MX700 to switch to the link cannon
(for ONS) and to 'use' vehicles, teleports, etc.

Im using a MouseManOptical and the thumb botton is almost at the bottom of
the mouse, where the thumb rests. Then i have added an small rubbber piece
to it, so i dont have to concentrate on finding it.
BTW its "forward" in my settings. (then i use Q for left strafe and W for
right and TAB for jump and SPACE for back)

Yes, I considered using the two thumbsbuttons for other, less reflexive
purposes and change the jump to something else. But it will take a
long time to get used to, after having the same config for so many years
(since Q1).

Thanks for the input.

I just today found I have two Mouseman (dual) opticals available too. I
remember testing them and having problems as well with them, but I' give
them a try again. I'll have to find a way out before my ball-mouse gets
broken.

Thanks for the tip about adding a rubber piece to it. That may also be a
solution with the MX518.

Hmm, that is very interesting, having Forward and Backward on two
different hands. Anyway, having forward on the thumb means you would
also want it to be available all the time.

(My config is the arrow-keys for movement, keypad for weapons stuff,
6-HOME keys for specials. Whole keyboard is placed to the left to get
the keys under my left hand)

Very interesting, these different configs, anyone else?

My setup allows me to have weapon selection without have to move my hand or
look at the keyboard. (it helps with more rubber pieces on the keys)

E= Link gun(electric gun 🙂)
F= Flak
R=Rocket
S=Sniper
D=Minigun (demolition)

1= enter vehicles

the others are standard.

And the wheel is
forward is either flak or minigun
back is either Shock or sniper.

I use space to jump. It's the thumb-button on my keyboard ;-)

I never liked the standards ASDW layout. It gives me too little extra
keys on the left of that combo. I moved my movement keys one key to
the right, so I can use

A Teleport
Q Sniper / Redeemer
W Minigun
R Rockets
T Flak
G Best weapon (Goodest in Bad English)
V Crouch

I would do that, but I play too many other games and demos that all
default to WASD it is too much of a pain to change all the controls
for each one so I live with it. As you are a Linux gamer you don't
have the problem of too many games ;-)

I feel the same - some games I just stick to the defaults. I played
UT* soooo much that I wanted a more optimal solution ;-)

True, unfortunately ;-)

I use the big thumb button for crouch, and the small thumb button for zoom
(I mostly play instagib)

I do the same for Halo and HalfLife 2
