I have a WD My Passport Ultra 1TB external HDD. This drive connects to a computer via a USB 3.0 A Male to Micro B Male cable, (the Micro B Male is on the drive side). I'm a DJ and recently got a Macbook Pro Retina. Right away, I'm having trouble with not having enough available USB ports for everything I need to plug into my laptop [(mixer, dicers, External HDD(s)]. Meanwhile, I have two Thunderbolt ports available that I currently have no use for. I would rather not have to employ a USB hub, as that's just one more piece of gear to have to take with me, and running a hub could also introduce a potential issue with software or outright failure of the device. I would like to keep my setup as simple and minimalistic as possible. The more devices that are introduced to the hardware chain, the more it will increase the likelihood of failure. Adding a USB hub to my DJ system would decrease the integrity of its reliability, so I would like to avoid this if at all possible. With that being said, here are my questions:

Can my WD My Passport Ultra communicate with my Macbook Pro via the Thunderbolt bus? If not, I'll stop right here and be forced to either acquire another drive (ideally) or turn to a USB hub for now. If this external HDD is capable of communicating via the Thunderbolt bus, then here are my next questions.

Is there a Thunderbolt to USB 3.0 Micro B cable available that will work with a WD My Passport Ultra?

If not, is there a USB 3.0 A Female to Thunderbolt Male adapter?

Also, if anyone has any other suggestions on ways I can mitigate these issues I'm having, please offer your suggestions. Thank you and any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello there, cyberwraith05!

I believe you shouldn't have any issues connecting your WD My Passport Ultra via Thunderbolt to USB 3.0 adapter/cable. Unfortunately, I'm afraid it cannot directly use a thunderbolt connection. We do have an external HDD that works with Thunderbolt and that's the WD My Passport Pro, but sadly the Ultra is not capable of that. My guess is @popatim's suggestion should work perfectly fine and it shouldn't affect your performance anyhow.

However, if there's anything let us know! Hope that helped! :)
