I had a really bad thunderstorm that cut off my computer, and when I turned it back on I wasn't getting any internet access through the ethernet cord. After some researching, I concluded that the thunderstorm just killed my network card and I was grateful that it didn't kill my PSU or mobo. Then, after a few hours I bought a network card and I had to go into my BIOS to disable the onboard LAN. After I had disabled it, my computer wouldn't turn on anymore. The light at the ethernet port is still on, but nothing is turning on. I'm guessing either my PSU or mobo or both is broken.

I have tried resetting the CMOS battery. My fans start spinning for about 5 seconds before going back down.

How do you connect to the internet..Cable modem, DSL or what? I would expect and surge that killed the on board LAN chip to damage the modem also. If you remove the add on card does the system boot with no internet? Have you checked Device Manager to see if the Ethernet device is shown as not working? Have you contacted your ISP and had them run a remote check on your modem for connectivity? If your system powers on, fans spin and MB shows any LED's lit I would say the PSU is ok. It would most likely not turn on if it was damaged by a surge. But it is a possibility. I would start by resetting everything to the way it was-no new card and on board LAN enabled. Verify the modem is good, check Device manager, go to network settings and try an new connection to connect to the internet. When you installed the new card, did you install the drivers for it, was it recognized by windows and installed on reboot? Lastly and very important, Please list all you components by brand and model number. Include the windows version.

I connect to the internet using cable modem. I haven't received the card yet. I can't really check anything as my computer doesn't boot up anymore. There's nothing wrong with my internet as all of my other electronic appliances and my other computer can connect to it just fine. My fans only turn on for 5 seconds before shutting down again.
