Last night there was a huge thunderstorm while my computer was on (I know, dumb of me to leave it on, honestly I forgot). A bolt of lightning struck nearby, the lights in the house flickered, modem reset, and there was a loud pop that came from the vicinity of my pc. Now my PC won't start. My PSU still works, and I narrowed the problem down to my motherboard. I took it out to inspect it, and there is a small missing chunk from what I presume to be the Ethernet controller. Nothing else seems to be blown, so will a blown ethernet chip keep the mobo from powering on? And is it possible that the surge of electricity came from the modem? The modem still works, and yes I was connected via Ethernet. Everything is connected to a surge protector, except of course the cable for my modem that goes into the wall.
