Perfect, not possible. Pretty decent, plug it all in and turn it on. If you want to be really anal about it you could put the speakers on a power conditioner and get monster cables. But I doubt it would make to much of a difference on those speakers. It would probably make a difference on a huge home theater system but not on a set of computer speakers.

I've heard computer speakers that sounded better than home theater systems costing 4x as much (without electronics!).

I guess at this point computer speakers are probably kicking regular home theater speakers butt for cost/performance ratio. But if you have the bucks I'm sure you can make a much nicer home theater system. My friends Paradigm 5.1 system totally kicks my klipsch systems butt. But those speakers were 2 grand apiece :)

They are definatly a worthy investment. Except for the repair bill once you shake your house apart...

Paradigms are a great speaker sound/value wise. NHT's are also a nice price/sound value. You can buy some nice old speakers used for cheap. Check out your local used stereo store.

I have alot of old speakers laying around so I dont need computer speakers. Their is alot of crap speakers coming out in the cheap HT market(like Bose). So unless you can find some regular speakers you might as well go with computer speakers.

No way computer speakers can compete with my old JBL 4311s and 4312s. hehe

When I can afford it I'm definatly going for a set of Paradigms. I listen to a lot of classical music and those just seem to sound better than others.

I listen to all music punk, jazz classical etc.

Paradigms are great and if you can get them used, they are even a better value. Even saying that, you can make your own speakers for less money. It kinda depends on how much effort you want to put in, some kits are really easy, some take more effort depending how much time/skill you have on woodworking etc.

Classical music is probably the most demanding music in case of the stereo equipment and speakers. Vocal and acoustic are also very demanding, meaning you need some good equipment. I'm not saying you need to spend 100k to enjoy it but what I like to call mid-fi(like Paradigm, NHT, Legacy) are great. If you want to spend 100k on buying some Wilsons go for it.hehe

I have a freind that makes speakers for a hobby and some for profit. He made me a great subwoofer. I made some monitor speakers for my music sytem in my bedroom from a kit and they sound wonderfull and very easy to make the kit.

I would check out a local used stereo store in your area if you have a store like that. Check out NHTs(Now Hear This), they are a good speaker for the price.

I'll just buy my friends Paradigms off him when he gets his next upgrade :)
I believe he has 2 monitor11s, a cc-370, 2 adp-370s, and a pw-2200.

If he doesn't upgrade anytime soon I might just go for the make your own path. My dad has been a professional carpenter for like 30+ years so the woodworking part shouldn't be a problem ;)

Klipsch who used to make great home and professional grade speakers and now make some decent computer speakers, and average home stereo speakers, with some average used home speakers(or some old Klipsch, from the 60 or 70's, or any good old speakers 60s, 70s JBL, Advent, Quads, Bozarks, Altec Lansing and etc), it will blow away any computer speaker in terms of sound.

Of course it may cost you more. They will hold their value is you ever want to sell them.

That is cool your dad has been a carpenter for 30+ years.

Just to do something inexpensive and will probably sound good is to buy some cheap drivers(most commercial grade speakers have drivers that only cost a few dollars and less, my next speaker project is building an array type speaker. I paided .49 cent a piece for some full-range drivers.} You can make some cabinets using 1" to 1.5" MDF.

I made some WTW (woofer tweeter woofer} speakers awhile ago that sound great. My neighbor is a cabinet maker so the boxs didnt cost me much. I used 1.5" MDF.

Before buying the Paradigms, try making just some simple bookshelf type 2-way speakers.

With your Dad's skill you can make some good speakers for not alot of money. With you Dad making the cabinets, with the basic parts depening on how much you want to spend on the drivers and crossover, less then 50 bucks or alot less!

Here is a link for a really cool site where I learned how to make a a speaker { and my friend who makes speakers) and my next project is making some amps and pre-amps.

<A HREF="http://www.diyaudio.com/" target="_new">http://www.diyaudio.com/</A>

Also Parts Express is a great place for buying speaker or just electronics and they sell speaker kits. Their are many other places to buy kits.

Parts Expresss link:<A HREF="http://www.partsexpress.com/" target="_new">http://www.partsexpress.com/</A>

If you decide to make some speakers please post some pics.

I would have made the cabinets myself but I don't have the wooodworking equipment to do a true DIY( Do it yourself) project.

I want to make a good tube amp and pre-amp. It surprises me you can even still get tubes.

I think making the speakers will be easier then making your awesome computer. My suggestion is have your Dad make the cabinets, and just use some cheap drivers(the speakers) to just experiment. If you use the same size hole in your cabinets, you can just replace the drivers with a better quality driver. Dayton makes some good drivers for the price. You can get drivers much cheaper then that. You really dont have to even make a cabinet/box. Just a flat peice of wood [just a front flat panel) with a tweeter, a simple crossover and maybe like an 8" woofer. Super easy to do.

I wish I had the woodworking equipment to make more speakers.

Some of the oldtimers around remember Heathkits, I made a few things from their kits.

Also, one of my favorite sites and I discovered them (almost 40 years ago) through
the back page/advertisment in a comic book. They have been around for many years.<A HREF="http://scientificsonline.com/article.asp?ai=117&sid=edsci&cm_mmc=edsci-_-link-_-na-_-home&bhcd2=1122751913" target="_new"> Edmund</A>

Folken, try making the speakers, you have the advantage of having a Dad who has the equipment and skill to make the cabinets which is really the hardest part, you can buy the boxes for people who don't have the equipment. If you don't want to make the cabinets.

I wish I could make these:<A HREF="http://www.passdiy.com/" target="_new"> Huge speakers</A>

If you try to make some speakers, I want to see the PICS!

I bought 24 4" full range drivers to make an array speaker. So besides making some tube amps, that is my next project, among many others.

Sorry for the off topic discussion.

A little over the top you think?! hehe. The wife/GF acceptance factor might be tough, but my GF just loves music so I could porbably get these speakers to put in the family room or basement.

Of course if you read the FAQs on how to he build these things, It is way beyond my skill!

I hope you enjoyed the links. DIY Audio site is very cool.

Best regards, the Prisoner.
